They can use it, but they also have hooks they can attach to the front suspension mounting points. Never actually see them use the tow-hook, except when I got stuck in a mudhole in the Washington mountains early last spring, then the guy ran a cable from his winch to the tow hook and dragged us the necessary 30 feet back onto dry road.

Obviously, that is what the tow hooks are put there for by BMW.

If they thought hauling your car around by hooking up to the suspension was a good thing - they would have stated so in the manual.

please use the tow hook, there was a massive yellow warning on my e60 to NOT tow by the front suspension. some asshole did and i believe it was the cause of a few issues i had later on.

im going to take a safe educated guess and say that the e90 is the same

I've seen labels on the front suspension stating not to hook onto the control arms. Hopefully they don't do that....

Yes you are correct. Big yellow stickers on suspension parts on every BMW I've ever had on a lift. Don't let those uneducated tow truck drivers tell you otherwise. Because they will bend or break something and not care.

When your BMW gets towed from a no parking zone by the city, do you think they use the tow hooks?

My buddy owns a tow truck company and refuses to use them on a flatbed. I think it has to do with the fact that it's not really meant to support "up/down" motion but rather "back/forth" motion". He always straps the wheels down with these harnesses that go over the tires and pin the wheels down. I haven't really seen anyone else use them on a flatbed, so I would make sure they can use your tow hook.

Probably not...but that doesn't make it OK.

tow hooks are for pulling the vehicle out of the mud, or up onto the deck of the truck, you can't 'tie the car down' with them

My car was towed on a flatbed a few weeks ago. They guy specifically asked to use the two hook.

He also strapped down the wheels to the back. he said it was very bad to strap down the car by using the suspension...

On a side note, if you have the m sport and a flat tire (two right side in my case) it is very hard to get up on the flatbed without scratching the underside of the front air dam. Took the two guy 45 minutes to get my car on the flat bed.

As a side note:

He knew what he was talking about, did a great job, and got a good tip.

Pullup with tow hook tie down in conventaional manner. Do not pull it up the flat bed by the control arms.
