Paint experts??

EDIT- the new question has become.-

i got re quoted at $500 without the blending all being done. SO. question is, do i have them use THEIR paint and match it to my space grey. OR is it better for me to have them get the BMW factory brand used paint according with my paint code and do it with that.. i want it to be perfect, he just explained to me that ordering the bmw paint to match, it might NOT match dead on which is why theyd likely have to blend it. he said using their own paint, he can get a great match and not worry about having to blend. can anyone advise me through experience which to do.

Don't bother blending in with the quarter panels. If they are worth using, they should be able to match the paint to the existing paint color using the factory paint. They like to blend in because it makes the change in color from fresh paint to older oxidized paint more gradual and leas noticeable. Personally, I've never gone that route and have always been happy with NOT blending and just using legit paint shops to match the part to the rest of the car.

yes I originally asked them if they could use BMW factory used paint -standox brand. just spoke on phone and if they use THEIR in house paint they can just match it perfect with their brand and just do the trunk. with standox they would haveto have it premixed and hope that it just matches so may have to blend. so. I guess just have then use their own 'ppg' maybe it was paint. also will cost me less. price not being the factor, I don't want anything but what needs to be painted painted. thanks

Bro, $880 seems pretty steep to fill, prep and paint a trunk! I don't have any experience with any high end paint shops, but I'll tell you this. I painted my aero lip my self and I purchased a quart of paint from a shop that I always purchase paint from for my business. They were able to match my tiag color on my car dead on by just punching in the code on their computer and mixing it up. And I didn't have to use "BMW" paint products. Honestly its okay to use other paint brands just don't go way cheap.

Actually, most paint shops (e.g. Sherwin Williams) are able to match the color of the paint based on the make and paint code found under the hood (or in the door jamb).

e.g. for a BMW Montego Blue it's BMW A51. From BMW A51, they can find out the paint blend and mix it for you.

I found with BMW's, A51 represents only one tone whereas makes like Toyota can have different shades just from a single paint code. That's where you'll probably need to match.

And I wouldn't bother blending it in either. It should be a fairly close match since the car likely isn't that old. Have them do a swatch for you so you can check against the body of the car. If it's not an exact match, you probably would want them to match the paint, otherwise just use the paint code as-is.

Is that not the cost of a CF trunk?

My dad just had his 325i front bumper and rear bumper painted for $500 with original BMW paint. I agree the price seems fairly high.

NJ and MD arent far, so prices may match, or relatively close enough. The shop that did my m3 rep front bumper, quoted me for no more than $300 to paint match and install a CLS trunk. And its even less for them to just paint it and I do all of the install. They use their own paint to match my montego blue, which I think they did an excellent job of.

I am just implying that MD and NJ are not far apart, and prices on items and labor are relatively the same. I may be wrong but I used to do alot of commuting between MD and south NJ by Philly, and most car repair/works were about the same prices in either state. And I got my bumper painted by a 3rd party, dealerships around here don't paint stuff in house, they would also use someone's body shop to paint and would refer me to it. It may be different in NJ, but thats how I know most of the dealership down here work. So I am also thinking for them to charge you $500, thats alot.

Need your opinion...

Guys,

I had a fairly large rock chip on my hood. so when I got the oem lip I thought it'd be a good time to get my hood, front bumper (because it had rock chips all over) and the lip painted. So I took it over to a paint shop my friend recommended because they did a great job on his car. The paint guy recommended painting the fenders as well so the whole front-end blends in better. He wanted to go with his paint, but when I asked about ppg ( since it's the paint BMW uses?) he recommended it and said it would be a better match than his paint. He also said the ppg paint would be $200 extra bringing the total cost to $900 with the lip installed.

After a week of waiting patiently, this was the result. The front ended up a shade darker than the rest of the car?? Can you guys notice the difference (btw it is more pronounced in the sunlight) ? How can the paint differ when they are using the exact paint code? Should I get the front end re-painted? Any suggestions ?

Bmw uses thier own "color system" paint. Not plg afaik. I had ppg paint and had to have it repainted by a bmw repair center for the same reason. Look up a bmw repair center on the website.

Keep in mind that your paint has been in the sun. The purpose of blending is to ensure a smooth transition. BMW factory paint, from what I recall, is water based. Most shops in the US (not Cali) are using solvent based.

Have the shop spray out a few test panels. Compare those to the adjacent panels. If this is close enough for your liking, go ahead without the blend.

Thanks. I'll look up bmw repair center. The paint guy said he'll add his paint to ppg, spary a few test panels to get the closest match. I'm driving by the paint shop to see if it worked.

Is it just me or do you guys see the difference in shade?
