Slight Jiggle/Play in steering column

Hey guys,

I have a slight jiggle in my steering column. It is not from my steering wheel as I have removed that and confirmed that the threaded head that the steering wheel connects to also jiggles.

It is very minor about 2mm each way but is still there and is annoying while driving.

Any ideas on the what it might be or the best way to diagnose it?

Do you mean some give (numbness/leeway) in the steering?

If so, then I have the same thing. Bothers me when driving on the freeway with subtle turns.

It feels specifically as if a bolt is loose or something is loose. It's not a soft jiggle. I can feel a distinct start and stop to the jiggle and it is within a very defined range. There is an obvious start and stop to the jiggle.

Hmm, mine isn't too noticeable, and the range is somewhat defined. Check your bushings and control arms

Lenaxia, did you ever find out what the issue was? I have the same problem on my 2009 328xi. Thanks!

Hey guys,

Any resolution on this?

I sent my vehicle to the dealers for a 4w alignment and they came back mentioning the play in the steering.

According to the dealer, the play could be remedied by replacing the upper steering column assembly and lower spindle shaft followed by another alignment - $1440.00 right there.

Also noted were that the left rear lower and upper control arms needed replacing as well as the track rods. $1240.00

Is this legit or am I being taken to the cleaners?
