I just finished installing my HID Angel Eye kit from Alpine. I followed all the instructions in the DIY videos provided by Alpine and started my car up & the angel eyes looked great...

I decided to go for a quick spin, after about 10 minutes my car went into limp mode and I got a message on my iDrive saying that the engine had over heated & I needed to stop. So i pulled over, disconnected the power that goes to the angel eye kit and i was able to drive home (at 20 mph).

The temp on my dash read 230 degrees
The engine did not seem hot at all, but there was one component to Alpine's HID kit that was pretty hot ( please see pic ). I had that particular component zip-tied to some random wires.

I am not sure where in the engine bay is the "thermometer" or what reads the temperature. I am starting to think the HID kit component that was so hot, was too close to the thermometer in the engine bay, causing the computer to think the engine was over heating.

I managed to get my car home, popped the hood and the engine bay was smoking with the scent of coolant, the cap for the coolant was soaked...looks like the radiator kicked the coolant back and was forcing the liquid out of the cap

Maybe someone here can shed some light on what happened...I have never had any issues with my car over heating, even driving in the middle of a hot Miami day.

1) where is the "thermometer" or component in the engine bay that reads temperature located?

2) What is this component of the Alpine HID kit?? and is it supposed to be so damn hot?

3) Should I just remove the kit and go back OEM? SMH this is so stressful

the last pic is simply showing where I had the piece of kit (that was really hot) zip tied. That is the driver side..

That thing is the resistor for the driver side bulb. It simply cancels out the errors. Sorry not sure what else it could be.

If you smell coolant its likely a coincidence and is a very real problem.

The hot piece of the HID kit is a resistor. As you know resistance causes heat. That particular piece should be ventilated in some respect. So wrapping it like that is not a good idea.

I dont think there is a direct correlation between your HID and your over-heating problem.

Thermostat and temperature readings are internal in the coolant passageways.

Your 230 degree reading was oil temperature? or Coolant? These cars dont have coolant temp gauges usually, only oil temps.

230-250 Oil is "ok" on this car.

230 is not ok for coolant.

If your car did not throw a code directly related to the lights, focus on getting the limp mode addressed.

Ok well I think i know what it is...

While my father was helping me install the HID kit, we didn't disconnect the battery in order to connect the power cable for the HID kit. While trying to unscrew the bolt for the cars power cord, he hit the body of the car with the wrench by mistake, causing a SPARK.

Could this spark kill my Water pump since it is an electric water pump? The car was off for at least 30 minutes prior to this happening...

Is there a fuse for the water pump that I could check? Does that make any sense!??!?

Problem probabably has nothing to do with Angel eyes.

looks like you need a new water pump/ thermostat...most likely a coincidence

I have Alpine's HID Angel Eye Kit and Fogs. It isn't the HID kit, its your water pump. Why I know this? All of this has happened to me. Yes the HID kit gets quite hot, but wouldn't cause your engine to overheat. You car must be around the 60,000 mile range I assume; my e92 hit 64k before my water pump went out (just had it replaced and installed for $700). Check your engine coolant, it's probably down to none because the water pump is giving out which is causing the engine coolant to be pressured out of its tank through it's tiny pressure valve at the bottom. What you need to do: Don't drive the car any further, buy some Prestone 50/50 and top it off, unplug the battery for approximately 10 minutes and drive the car asap to have the water pump replaced. The reason to unplug the battery is so the car won't pick up and throw the "engine overheat" message at you and make your car go into limp mode again. If you simply put the coolant, your car will operate for about half a mile/mile or so and do it again. I'm 100% sure this is your problem and I'm speaking on experience and product usage. PS! Just went above and read the rest of your first post: Stop driving the car bro, your gonna F up the engine! Believe me I got lucky! Fan starts to go off and sounds like your driving a plane! LoL!
