My quote from Autoglass for E92 335d windscreen

"Dear Mr. ............

Thank you for contacting Autoglass® recently via email, to obtain a quotation for the replacement of the Windscreen for your BMW 3 Series. Based upon the information you provided we are able to give a price of:

Retail Price: £894.42.

As an incentive to our customers we do offer discounts, please find the discounted prices below:

Online Discount Price: £811.59.

If you call us back and book in today you will receive a further saving, the updated price is: £728.76.

Also if you have an AA Member number or decide to pay the full amount today, we will give you the maximum discount we can offer, the final price would be: £645.93

We can offer a further discount if you wish to drive into one of our branches or if you have glass cover on your insurance; we may be able to replace this glass for your excess amount.

We hope you find this quotation acceptable"

I'm sure I read in a thread that a screen was £211 + vat so that makes it £250 for an OEM screen & the cheapest they can do is £645..... £400 seems a piss take for fitting.

Any idea wht the part number is for my screen (pc crashed last week so lost all me BMW bookmarks)

Question

Sounds like the sort of thing you hear from double glazing companies.

The cost for a new screen 6 months ago from my main dealer on my E91 was £770 inc VAT and fitted.

Glass was £221 + VAT
Fitting was £330 + VAT
Plus new sensors etc etc and not forgetting the Achtung sticker giving a fitted total of £770

Suddenly makes the main dealer cost appear not as bad as I thought.

Why is the fitting charge so high?

I had a screen replaced on an older car and the guy had it done in no time.

what I find strange is that something that can cost nearly £800 doesnt effect the NCB (or does it ?)

cant see how it costs £330 + vat for labour TBH.

Would have thought £150 tops.

Might offer them £450 & see what happens or buy a screen & get a price for fitting from a mobile installer.

I would buy the OEM screen and have a trusted/known independant fitter put it in.

Quids in mate.

Am I missing something here? Why not just claim on the insurance and pay £50-75?

I am going to need my screen done at some point.

I had AG round today to fix a chip and the woman said it couldn't be repaired. Well...it could have been but she thought there was a high probability that it would crack during the repair due to the location of the chip

Are you really going to take a woman's word for it?

My screen is just very badly pitted so that's probably not an insurance claim or is it ? . Now I've noticed it, it is really starting to bug me.

Had a go at polishing it with cerium oxide but that was a waste of time.

Dont mind paying for it ( within reason) but £700+ is taking the pee

I'll admit I was a little surprised when a woman turned up...something about knowing her limits popped into my head

So now I have a chipped windscreen that can't be repaired but it's not broken so I can't get an insurance replacement it would seem??? Apparently I have to wait for it to "go".

Which, knowing my luck, will no doubt be when I'm doing...ahem...70mph on the M40 next week sometime!

I wouldn't worry about it going on you whilst driving.

When they crack, they are still OK to drive with (they don't shatter like they used to).

In my case last year, I was still about to get back from the South West of France and run around for a week whilst the insurance company got their act together with a nice big crack in the screen.

My guess is they were covering themselves for the multiple repeat visits to get the rain sensor working again.

Emailed a few local independents last night to guage the prices. Here's the first one back

"Hi thanks for the enquiry
the are 3 different screens for that model car
the most common one is green/grey+moister sensor
supplied and fitted would be £270.00 + vat for the screen
and £15 + vat for the trim if required
we could supply and fit this tommorow pm"

THAT'S more like it. See what the others come back with.

Is the green tint standard as I cant say mine has any tint really.

I'm going through exactly the same process with our 130i. Went to the local Autoglass, same 'full' price quoted, although their 'best price' was £500 odd.

Same lack of joy with cerium oxide kit.

However, he did point out a small 'chip' proper and suggested I do it through my insurance.
