You can try to spray some WD40 to help loosen it up. But if you are replacing them (not turning them) then yes. Bang away with a hammer until they fall off. It's is the only way.

clean the hubs with brake cleaner to get all the rust off and use some anti sieze before installing new rotors to avoid the problem in the future.
you can use a hammer, but do it through a piece of wood so you're not hitting the metal directly. |

Liberally soak the mounting bolt area and behind the rotor with PB Blaster. Your goal is to try and get it to flow between the rotor and the hub. Then let it sit a few hours to let the PB Blaster do its thing. Then hammer away.

Which axle are you trying to remove the rotors from, front or rear?
Make sure you have removed the retaining bolt (and this will sound stupid) - remove the brake calipers and mounting brackets) If it is the front rotors, light tapping is all that should be needed. If it is the rear rotors, like dfriller said, TAKE THE PARKING BRAKE OFF, then you'll need a bit more force. What I use is a 18" long piece of closet wood dowel and a 2 or 3 lb sledge hammer. Keep taping around the rotor (you have to hit it in the place where the brake caliper resides, so you need to spin the rotor around) |
