Ontario Residents pleasse chime in

I'm moving to Toronto from Calgary later this month. I was wondering if use Radar Detectors in Ontario are outright illegal, or is it just frown upon ?

it is an offense to be operating a detector in ontario.

would you care if it was "frowned upon"? I wouldn't.

Thanks for the info... I'd still be careful if it was

I had my experience probably 3 years back now. it was a Valentine 1 as well. Cop didnt charge me for having it, but he did take it away. He gave me a regular ticket. Good thing he didnt show up to court when I fought it. So it was dropped. But i still lost the detector.

Thats a frist I have heard someone being fined. The fine is more like $160 for first offence and up to a maximum of $1000. They will be confiscated.

Use is illegal. You can own one, just not use it in Ontario.

They have in some vehicles Radar Detector Detectors and are used on the 401. If caught the fine is about $170 and the unit is confiscated. This is what I have only read.

You are allowed to have one in your possession but it must be in the trunk and not in use of course.

There is a unit out there that is 100% invisible.

This site is good for information etc.

Bell STi is still detectable, but you have to be really close (within 100 feet) to be detected, and of course they can still see it. Strangely, the distributor is in Missisauga.

The radar detector detector was developed in Ontario and can sniff out "normal" radar detectors from up to 1000 yards, supposedly.

Just one more reason not to move back to Ontario.

ok...I must be way off base then...Perhaps I was led to believe the fine was bigger then it was...about 5-6 years ago I was getting speeding tickets left right and centre...125km/hr...130km/hr...140km/hr...all female cops on the 401...I almost started using a radar detector until someone told me the fines were insane...then I started driving smarter and I grew up in the process....

you should be fine 90% of the time if you have the undetectable units (STI driver for example). Id say its not worth it unless you go for long drives on the highway - otherwise, you will be in traffic most of the time in Toronto and going below the speed limit.
