As Ontario now has HST, is it even worth importing a car from the USA?

Purchase a used car in the USA (Any taxes?), import into Canada by paying duty (6%) plus RIV fees and then HST (13%)?

What's the difference? You had to pay GST and PST on imported vehicles before anyway, right? The only difference is that GST was payable at the border; PST at the time of registration.

Just making sure I'm not missing anything. Duty (6%), HST (13%) on sale price after exchange, then RIV fees is all, correct?

nothing changed...pay GST + additional charges if applicable at the border and PST at registration with MTO and yes it may still be worth importing depending on type of vehicle

Nothing's changed as far as total Canadian taxes just how they are appied. No taxes in the state as long as you plan to export and not keep it in the state or have it tagged to an address in that state of purchase. As for Duties - 6.1% - for foreign - if you get an X5 or Z4, the build is in Alabama so no duties.

I'm wondering the same thing, our currency is so good right now. Theres a few cars I'm looking into.

Just had a thought. The HST does make a difference in that the HST amount is applied to the price of the vehicle plus duty, whereas PST was only payable on the price of the vehicle. For example:

Old scenario, car is $50,000 (CAD)

Duty of 6.1% = $3,050.00

GST of 5% on $53,050.00 = $2,652.50

PST of 8% on $50,000 = $4,000.00

Total amount excluding RIV, inspection, etc. = $59,702.50

New scenario, car is $50,000 (CAD)

Duty of 6.1% = $3,050.00

HST of 13% on $53,050.00 = $6,896.50

Total: $59,946.50

OK, it's a small difference but there is still an additional $244 in tax being collected in this example.
