318i M ED question
Hi,
I've just got one of the above as a courtesy car and there's a couple of things on in which I really like but not sure if it's possible to make these changes to my own car (2006 330d m) The first is the noticeable difference in how light the clutch is - the courtesy car is a 60 plate - was there any changes in how the clutches were delivered in the 2 cars? On my own car, it's very tough and very tiring in traffic. The 318's is effortless and very light. The 2nd thing is the ride quality. Should there be a difference in a 2006 and 2010 M sport model? I thought the M sport pack all provided the same setup - unless it's been adjusted by BMW over the years to make it less harsh? The courtesy car has the same MV3 alloys as mine. Ta. |

I've found the same with the M-sport suspension.
My pre-LCI 320i with RFTs was terrible (usual stuff, crashy ride, etc). My LCI 318d with RFT is completely different - much closer to the 320i with non-RFT. I'm more prepared to get some VFM out of the RFTs on this car before changing. |

I happen to ask these questions from the BMW bod and he said the reason why the clutch was lighter is because they now use a double plate clutch (or something) and the reason why the ride quality was better in the loanee is because, although the wheels are the same - the tyre width will be smaller and because the 3.0 diesel in mine is allot heavier - it will make a massive difference in how the suspension works.
Oh well. I thought the 318i was a lovely car. A little gutless - but for pottering around town it was very comfortable, with it having a lighter clutch and I'm guessing active steering - because it was beautifully weighted. I also preferred the leather in it compared to mine - it was allot softer. |
