Post iDrive crash

Our Japanrot 3er has suffered from intermitten crashes of the iDrive system since pickup. I first noticed it in Vienna and asked the VDC to look at it when the car arrived in the States.

They recoded the car and it behaved for a while, but then it crashed again.

The dealer recoded the car again and, again it behaved for a while, and then crashed.

The dealer was told by BMW (PUMA) to perform a CCC boot file reconstruction. It crashed on them the next day during testing.

The fault from that crash finally showed something: data line fault, open circuit.

So they ordered a new data line cable (has to come in from Germany, will take 7-10 days) with the hope that this will remedy the problem.

Loaner car which they brought when they picked up the car is comparably equipped so it's not a big deal. When it's done, it's done.

And to make people even happier, Microsoft is now partnering with auto manufacturers (first up is Ford) for future in car software application, thus guaranteeing that crashes will part of growing up for future generations upon generations of car drivers:mad:

No Ford is not first. That would of course be Fiat.

Looking forward to the first car with OS X instead of Windows... It was bad enough having a Windows-based phone, let alone a car!

Really, I thought the iDrive OS was based on Windows CE.

I've had similar problems since November. The dealership rebooted the system, recoded the system, replaced the system, replaced part of the wiring, and it still crashes. I have to wait quite a while before restarting in order to get it to boot. As far as I know they've never been able to get any kind of fault code.

Am I missing something? Has the iDrive software been entirely rewritten from scratch:

Yes, of course the headline refers to the BMW 7-series, but if you have facts to share indicating that iDrive now has no connection to its original underpinnings I'd be happy to read them.

I think it´s more than enough than I´m patiently explainining this to you. It´s not using Windows Automotive. It´s running VxWorks.

All clear now?

I have no ego about being wrong, but you might want to learn the distinction between "patient explanation" and "petulant and childish baiting game".

I don't see anything childish except your inability to accept what he said originally. He made several clear statements that iDrive is not running Windows.

For most people (except you apparently), anything he says can be accepted as fact. But not you.

Besides, how do you figure you were being baited?
