iDrive crash
Our Japanrot 3er has suffered from intermitten crashes of the iDrive system since pickup. I first noticed it in Vienna and asked the VDC to look at it when the car arrived in the States.
They recoded the car and it behaved for a while, but then it crashed again. The dealer recoded the car again and, again it behaved for a while, and then crashed. The dealer was told by BMW (PUMA) to perform a CCC boot file reconstruction. It crashed on them the next day during testing. The fault from that crash finally showed something: data line fault, open circuit. So they ordered a new data line cable (has to come in from Germany, will take 7-10 days) with the hope that this will remedy the problem. Loaner car which they brought when they picked up the car is comparably equipped so it's not a big deal. When it's done, it's done.

And to make people even happier, Microsoft is now partnering with auto manufacturers (first up is Ford) for future in car software application, thus guaranteeing that crashes will part of growing up for future generations upon generations of car drivers:mad:

No Ford is not first. That would of course be Fiat.

Looking forward to the first car with OS X instead of Windows... It was bad enough having a Windows-based phone, let alone a car!

You don´t mean our cars, do you. They don´t run Windows.

Really, I thought the iDrive OS was based on Windows CE.

Oh the horror of it all! To be in Vienna and have a problem! Even when you're reporting a problem (that would have the rest of us hopping mad) you are living the dream my friend! "... as I was wintering in the Greek Islands, I happened to notice that a small button had become loose upon my shirt. Indeed, I feared that if not for the single thread barely holding it in place, I may have indeed lost the valuable pearl disc that is instrumental in adequately fastening my attire. Were it not for the kindness of a local seamstress, I may have had to relinquish said shirt to the sea. So upset was I at the prospect of this near tragedy, I was barely able to take my tea as scheduled. Woe is me, and cursed are the problems that torment me so!"

Hate to break it to you but iDrive uses Windows Automotive as its foundation, which in turn is based on Windows CE, the kernel of which dates back to 1994.

You don´t have to hate to break it to me, but what you said is flat out wrong.

Am I missing something? Has the iDrive software been entirely rewritten from scratch:

Yes, of course the headline refers to the BMW 7-series, but if you have facts to share indicating that iDrive now has no connection to its original underpinnings I'd be happy to read them.

I have no ego about being wrong, but you might want to learn the distinction between "patient explanation" and "petulant and childish baiting game".
