Daytime Running Lights

Should I be charged to activate this service?

No. You can change it through your i-drive screen.

IIRC, push in knob, then go to vehicle settings, then go to lighting. Should be an option that is checked on or off.

Insert your key FOB while in the car and not running and you will push on the stalk to see more menus that you would not see during driving. IMO I think it is a waste but to each their own. The lights will be yellow and not like the Xenons during night time driving BTW.

Activating DRLs should be free for non Idrive bimmers. But call the dealer to make sure.

They offered to do it for me free but I just saved myself the trip and did it myself.

Yep. Without idrive you use the Menu on the stalk/center screen. Also takes 10 seconds..

It depends on the Production date of the vehicle, vehicles prior to 9/05 will need to be retrofitted via programming at the dealership for this option. After 9/05 production, should be able to do it through the turn signal stalk on non-idrive equipped vehicles. I know when delivering a vehicle there typically is no charge for the activation, however once delivered, some dealers will charge for this service. But, with the knowledge that can be gained by knowing other E90 owners have the option of not having to bring their vehicle to the dealer to have this performed, and the fact that CSI "Customer Satisfaction Index" runs every dealership, you should be able to get it done for no charge. Just remember to bring it to the place you bought the vehicle, they probably wont argue and just do it for you.

I was pleasantly surprised when I found out you can do it through the control stalk. That was such a dealer rip off/gimmick for it before.

This is true. My car has a July 2005 production date and I would have to return to the dealer to have my DRL settings changed (currently set to ON). Even after the software updates, I still have no DRL setting in iDrive (or parked car ventilation).

I have a august 05 production model. I recently got mine activated. I have the options to pick the lighting selections but not DRLs.

One thing i did not like was that as a result of activating the DRL, when i enter my car, put the keyfob in and sit (with out turnining on lights), the DRLS are on! I thought they would be set to be on once i put the light switches in automatic mode. I thought that made sense. This can drain my battery... and has! I also think i have a weak battery that needs changing.

BTW: The dealer did it for me at no cost, it wasn't even a question of price. It was just like everything else that came under new car warranty.

In Euro specs. can I also active DRLs?
- on my own or,
- only dealer can do?

Reading previous post, I suspect it depends the production date.

Read the Manual

Activating & deactivating the DRLs is covered in the manual. Look at the control section, page 73...

I hate DRLs...I deactivated them on my car.

It makes you look like you are driving some old american car (saturn or some GM thing) and you are 70 years old.

Correct on the dates about when you can change them yourself or when you have to go back to the dealer and have it done.

Also when he said it was going to take an hour to do, did you take into thought other cars that might be ahead of you or already being worked on? Sometimes it can easily eat up an hour going outside to find your car, get it in, do it, and get it washed (yeah it sucks but when only 3 people in washbay and the line is backed up, it can be a while), the settling out the paperwork at the front desk?

It took me almost half an hour today just to get everything all figured out so I could do my OWN oil change...LOL.

What? This little procedure takes literally takes less than 30sec. to do. (from your turn signal stalk).

that's the price of admission for people that don't bother reading their manual*

*only applies to those that have post-September 2005 E9x, pre-Sptember cars do require you to take it in, but dealership shouldn't charge you for it
