First oil change on my (new to me) 07 335i

The oil change was pretty easy. No probs there. Well, except for one. At first it was almost impossible for me to get the filter housing off.

After I took off the drain plug, the apparent vacuum that was formed broke and the housing came off with no problems. Is this the common way to do this? I have read quite a bit on here and hadn't seen anything on that.

Regardless, the oil is changed and the service reminder is reset. Big thanks to the E90 forum for help here and on on other questions as I lurk about.

BTW, the car is of the Space Gray/ Coral Red variety with the 6 spd. Love it!

And one more thing. I just restocked on oil. And Mobil 1 is still on sale at O'reilly's Auto for $4.99/qt.

92 views and no one can tell me if the apparent vacuum on the oil filter housing is normal? I guess I will find out in another 7400 miles.

most of us are stoned or wasted when we're on e90 post.. so yes, you can get 400 views before anybody figures out how to respond...

as to your question, there shouldn't be a vacuum. In fact, you should get an oil filter wrench.

second, you probably shouldn't just use any mobil 1 5w30. mobil 1 5w30 in america is not BMW LL-01 approved, but rather mobil 1 0w30. if you want to use 5w30, the Valvoline synthetic 5w30 is approved and so is the Castrol Syntec

Sorry to hear you had that problem. I've changed my oil 4 times and by luck (perhaps), I've always opened the cap, "pull" the plug and let 'er drain, and then take out the filter (housing). First time I did it I quickly realized that my pan only had a 6.5 quart capacity... what a hot, oily mess. Bonus was that I got to watch it happen while still on my back. F&*%!

Also, since you're in USA:

Thanks for the input guys.

Nuke, I used rags (to get a better grip) and tried a filter wrench. It wasn't moving! But after the oil was drained, the housing was tight but could be moved. The housing was screwed in so that the green marks (to line up the housing with the holder) were passed. Perhaps all of this was due to an overly enthusiastic tech. I will do most of my maintenance, so we shall see on the next go around.

Oh, and I used Castrol Syntec European Formula. It is on the approved list. Mobil 1 0w-40 is also on the approved list and at $4.99/qt, I'm stocking up!

Aleckzandr, I feel you on the oil container probs. I remember my first oil change on my truck. I had changed plugs and wires. Done some other general maintenance. A pretty productive day. Except......my oil container is the enclosed type with a screw out drain in the middle of it. As the oil started pouring, I was laying there watching the pan quickly fill up with no where for it to drain! One semi burnt hand later, and disaster was averted! LOL

Ahmed, I used this to reset my service intervals: The only difference was that I actually had to start the car to get to the menu. Good luck.

Step 1
Insert key into slot
Step 2
Press start/stop button without depressing clutch/brake and wait for the service reminder to dissapear.
Step 3
Immediately after service reminder goes out, press and hold the odometer reset. After 3 secs a warning triangle will appear, keep the odo. button pressed and after another 2-3 secs the Oil can will appear. I f you hold it too long (10 secs in total) you will overshoot the runway and some German writing will appear giving the software level/ can bus etc. of the car. Go back to the beginning and start again.
Step 4
You are now in the service menu, use the toggle switch on indicator stalk to scroll up/down through the various service items.
Step 5
When you have the item you want to reset showing, press the BC button on end of indicator stalk. Reset should now appear in the display. Press in and hold the BC button for 2-3 secs and a clock will start whirling around and hey presto, its done
Step 6
You can now either scroll up/down to select another item (as in step 4) or you can press the start/stop button to exit.
