Here's how i spent my valentine's day!

So, i wake up a lil late, but i wake up to the freezing rain hitting window. I'm like damn its terrible out there. My moms probably just getting in her car. I should take her to work before I go. So I do that.

This is my frist time driving the car in snow. It was cool. DSC was working for the majority of the ride. I had to travel a good 3mls to drop her. On the way back, things got bad. As DSC kept working and working... i had a 2 control messages come up.

-DBS (Dynamic Braking System) has failed! Please be cautious!
-Passenger Seat Belt failed! Please....

I'm like wtf??!

So i turn off and turn back on. It goes away. Great!

So as I am deciding, should i go to work straight, go home and change, or get some breakfast before I decide, it happens again!! I start loosing more control

As i took it to tthe dealer last week, they recommended I get new tires... im like.. shit don't tell me this is the day i find out. And the Snow was really coming down!

Got some breakfast, then got back in. As i drove off, still in control, a total of 5 messages came up. (see pic posted below) Now im like ooooooh shit wtf!!! I am going straight to the dealer!

DSC failed! it started using DTC only, then it just didn't use them at all!!! I was going crazy! I kept trying to press the button to see if it will enable/disable it.. or at least give me a sign! NOTHING!

Instead of calling BMW assist, SOS, or my dealer, i went straight to em. SO they could have a look of course.

I get there and the guy says ooooooooooh its nothing, once you turn the car off and turn back on its fine right? im like.. yeaa???

So i get in the car, and all 5 start back up! I'm like F that i grabbed a mechanic to look at it. After they discussed whatever it was, the service rep told me because most of the messages were yellow, it just means to be cautious. I'm like..... ARE YOU SURE?!?!?! hes like yeah, RED! is the big thing to worry bout...

okaay, so tell me why i couldn't even get out of the dealer, i was skidding so much i smelled burnt tires coming through the car. A mechanic had to push me out. I saw a 530i leave before me, and he was fine! I'm like shit, maybe i dooo need new fricken tires. I have done high speeds with it most recently as well and have driven the car like I've stolen it quite a few times.

I leave the dealer on remsen and get to ralph and east 80th street coming on east 80th into ralph avenue. And... i can't move when it said greeen! I was sooooooooooooo embarrassed!! i gave the e90 and quite possibly BMW a bad name. I was stuck for like... 7 minutes. Cars passed around me looking at me... i got out and had to clean the wheels and get back in...

I said fuck this i am getting new tires. This was the worst part, i spent like just under 800 for 3tires+1 free, wheel alignment warranty, and tire insurance. All done just over an hour. This delays my new rims .

The good thing is, I finally was in more control. I believe i also read on the forums earlier last year that "DSC limited, DTC activated" should be used when in snow. Because the DSC will keep going off and at times prevents you from getting more traction that you do actually need.

and today, yesterday i realized that it is true. Standard tires feel much better than RFTs when driving. Now I feel more luxurious lol. Ya'll already know brooklyn streets are no joke.

I'm still trying to follow your post, so your car threw up a bunch of errors cause your tires were old?

How many miles do you have on your tires? I haven't even worn through my tires yet (and I have the sport package 18's).

I use a dedicated set of snow tires on 17's, so I didn't have much of a problem the past couple of days (except for the horrible traffic).

Let me guess, you were on summer tires?

Is it possible the DSC overheated due to excessive slipping by your summer performance set-up?

Don't do it. Last week when it snowed about 1in, I figured I would be alright. WRONG! I was looking for parking on a side street, going about 5mph, I tried making a turn and almost hit a parked car. Trying to avoid the car I ended up about 6in from an electrical pole. I spent the next 45min trying to get myself out of that corner, while watching others make that same exact turn just fine. I just couldn't get any grip.

whoa! nah, i don't think they were summers. They were stock bridgestone RFTs, but they just didn't have much grip left. I could have seen most of a penny when i stuck it in the grooves of the tire.

I'm good now! and the ride feels so much better. I get a lil slide hear and there as expected but nothing too serious. Prolly cuz of my cheap 800 bux worth of tires.

d3lon: you have Sport package, so by stock RFTs they are definitely summer tires. the problem is, aside from the worn thread, they get hard in low temperatures rendering them pretty much useless in cold weather, let alone wintry road conditions.

no summer tires, but i think that is probably what happened. I mean, what is the DSC System itself? A box? lol, i mean i know what it does. Also, maybe I was over doing it on my way home that day before i got the new tires. As soon as light turned green, DSC was flashing all the time as i came to the next red light or stop sign.

Are you sure you have the sport package? The photos in your "garage" look like the standard 17 inch wheels from the 330i, which come with with all-season tires (Bridgestone Turanza). They aren't as good as a set of dedicated snow tires, but they will still be better than "summer tires" (i.e., the 18inch Bridgestone Potenza that come with the sport package).

This may be too late, but did you ever consider putting snow tires on your current wheels since you plan on getting 19's in the near future?

uh oh.. hmm.. maybe i don't have sport then. Besides the suspension being "tuned", 162 rims, different seats, what's the difference with sport/non sport?

(for non sport, I must say, with all the wicked things I've done it still handles well)

Is the suspension lower? by how much? Stiffer? Can i.... get it "tuned"?

You listed most of the changes with the sport package, there is also a different steering wheel with a slightly smaller diameter, thicker rim, and different center section. The suspension changes include a 15mm lower stance (about 0.6 inches), and different shocks.

If you were interested in upgrading the handling of your car, an aftermarket setup may give you better results for your money. But then again, there may be a few people selling their "used" sport package springs and shocks.

So i have to ask. What kind of tires were you on.
I drove from stonybrook to nyc and back during the snow storm and i only had one instance where the car stepped out and that was due to me giving it a bit too much gas to complete a pass.
Im on snows and the rears are VERY low on tread and I was still doing fine.
