Shattered Windshield

What do you guys think? Was my windshield shattered or vandalized?
I drive 3 hr (45 min normal) to work Tuesday in near zero wx with the defrost on most of the time. I had to. I came out to the parking lot on Wendsday night to find this. I was parked into the wind and the windshield was warm from 3 hrs of defrost. It does not seem like it has damage on the outside and bows ever so slightly out. Glass everywhere, BMW road side assist useless. They said emergency conditions in all of IL despite clear and dry streets last night. I set up a tow anyway just to see, and they called back to say I cannot tow to a closed dealer. It was too late. What a crock. I covered the dash with a towel an drove home. Probably not the best idea in hindsight. I hope it shattered, no deducible. I take it to the dealer in about an hour. Any suggestions?

Definetly was an impact, the second picture shows a large impact, than maybe a bounce to the other side.

Cold crack or heat shock would of already happened and would only be long line cracks not impact like shattering.

Good luck with the repair. Keep warm.

well, I am not so sure if it is impacted by some object. OP said windshield bows outward slightly. An impact from an object would cause the windshield to bow inward. But the shattering pattern shows some sort of object hits the windshield. Will be interesting how bmw will handle this and how the insurance will handle this should bmw decline any defect on the windshield.

I noticed that you are from Chicago. I am assuming the damage was caused from falling ice. Falling ice atop of buildings happens here in Chicago. Yesterday, there were people running for their lives to avoid the falling ice near Michigan Ave.

Holy cow. That sucks. To me this doesn't look like a vandalism or
something hitting/falling on the windshield from the outside. This
isn't how windshields break when things fall on it (had a couple of
those in other cars). If I were you, I would find a guy with lost of
experiece who does windshields and either take the car to him, have
him come over or show him this picture and see what he thinks/says.
The first thing that will come out of your dealer's mouth would be "oh
yeah something definitely hit your car" since my guess is they haven't
seen many of those.

Best of luck with the insurance and keep us updated on what
happens. I'm moving with the family to Chicago end of March and
I'd hate to see that happen to my car

No falling ice. It was in the employee parking lot at O'hare. Lot's of pissed of airline employee very mad at some of us who they perceive as making too much money. Believe me I am at the bottom of my profession for pay and save for a long time for this car. Anyway could just be random. Could be snow removal brush through something up. SA looking for a part now.

That's what I'm starting to think. If it was thermo, I think there would be one center point, stress relieved, all done. SA, over the phone, said it could be a weak point from chip, then thrermo, but seemed odd that there are two spider webs. Lot's of snow equipment around too that day. I am going to take another posters suggestion and stop buy a trusted body shop and see what my guy thinks. Maybe he can recommend a glass guy to have a look. I cannot drive too much. It very hard to see, and glass keep falling off. I think I need something to protect my eyes. BMW assist still worthless this morning. Calling customer care later to bitch.

Will do. Two spiders however does have me leaning to an outside force on a threro stressed window. Maybe weak already. Maybe just some jack off at work too.

Very very sad to see this... I sure hope you do not have some sort of a hater out there.....

On the other hand I never had a good expereince with BMW assist / roadside.... Of the 2 times I needed them they failed me big time in complete normal weather conditions..... On one incidence I was stuck in downtown seattle with 2 blown tires on a 325XI..... they showed up 5 hours later with a regular tow truck....which I refused to get the car towed on... In both cases AAA responded rightaway after BMW's BS!

Good luck w/ your car.

Ya me too. I think it was probably just random. Like I said in another post, lots of people mad at work and they don't know where to direct it. To think this happened on secure airport grounds. Hmmmm

Thanks for all the responses. Long story, but after much investigation, It looks like the snow removal guys dumped a bunch of stuff on my car and caused the damage. Damage to the hood and trunk also. Repaint time. Looks like the owner of the company is going to pay the bill. Probably about 3k. I hope he follows through on his promise. If not then insurance. I posted some repaint questions in the exterior repairs sections.

That I don't know. I would hope not. The owner was not driving any of the vehicles, just employees. If he does not pay, then I will use my insurance and let them use their lawyers to get the cash. It looks like the whole thing including a rental is about $3500.

how exactly does snow removal constitute dumping snow on or near a car causing such damage? were those jerk-offs trying to bury it?

Any cameras looking over your car at the airport? If there are, then why
don't you go look for a copy? You have nothing to lose but it may come
in handy. How on earth did they do that to the car though and why didn't
they leave a note? How did you find out?

Believe it or not, my company and the city say there are no security cameras there. That's what they tell me anyway. Why did they do it, I don't know. Turns out there are two others damaged also. One hood crushed in the other roof crushed in. One was a BMW too. I went back in the day, and did some investigation. The evidence points that way and my company gave me the number to the snow removal company. He said fax him the estimates and indicated he would pay. We shall see. If not then $250 deductible with insurance, I give them his name and written evidence and let them pursue the matter.

I'm sure they will pay. But if they don't, consult a lawyer before going
through your insurance. Sounds to me like they intentionally damaged
the cars?

Shit! That sucks man...hope they pay up!

What they do not realize, is that $$$ is not enough for the PIA crap you will have to go through to get this all sorted and fixed. They just pay to get your ride back to they way it was before they messed it up...nothing to compensate you for all the crap you will need to do to get it done.

Good luck man.
