BMW to integrate the Apple iPhone?
The only thing that would make me opt for the iDrive system in my new M3, would be this. Please don't let it just come to the 7-series...
:rocks: [from Autospies] One of the most exciting technology announcements so far this year, if not THE most exciting, is the news of the forthcoming Apple iPhone. The big question is once you have the phone, what car company will be the first to integrate its feature set into their cars. And not just bluetooth. Reliable sources tell us there are rumors that BMW will be the first to announce full integration of the iPhone features into the next 7-Series. |

I will pass on the iphone. I bought the 1st gen macbook pro and it's great but is it worth the premium? Nah, I don't think so. Don't see myself spend 500 dollars on something I replace every two years.
There are other factors we dont know yet. For example, the battery life, how many video can I watch before it runs out of juice? I know on my video ipod I can probably watch about 2 hours before it runs out but the iphone is something I need all day and watch video |

So they are putting it in my M Coupe? Cuz that's the way my Nav system looks. (that pic is of the Z4's system)
Agree on the battery life of iPod. Not too impressive. Although jeez, I'd at least like an aux input on the new M3.... |

I would not know a reason why not to get iDrive.

3) I will agree that it is not placed well, but it is by far ugly. 4) I never knew that was going to be an issue with people buying a 65G car.

iDrive
Good debate (OT a bit I guess). I am on the fence about iDrive. I have heard all the complaints that Adam stated and they seem legitimate. I have also heard that the only folks who do not like iDrive and 60 year old luddites. I have not used it myself so just one more fun buying decision to make. Any good unbiased reviews of iDrive anyone can point me to?

I'll eat my foot if BMW fully integrates the Apple iPhone into the E92 M3's iDrive system. I already expect there will be integration for music like the iPod MOST Integration kit, but if it showed up on the screen like the above pic, I'll be in heaven!

did you read this on gizmodo? those dudes are so funny. let me quote.
"Just when we thought iPod integration in autos was the next big thing, there are rumors that car manufacturers are planning to integrate the iPhone as well. It's the next logical step, so we're not too surprised, but who's going to be the first? Well, someone wrote down a bunch of automaker's names and put them all in a hat, lit the hat on fire, took a dump in the hat, and quickly pulled out the first legible slip and decided it was going to be the BMW 7-series. That's what we hear so far, at least."

Now the question remains; is Nav a goody or a nesesity? I must say I have it in my current M3, but do I use it a lot..............NO Be honest, couldn`t you find the way in your previous car, that had no Nav in it?........................wel I think you did find the way Conclusion; it is a goody allwright, not strictly needed, but still nice as a show off |

I think depending on where you live, and how much you drive, having a Nav is nice. If you have to drive all over the Los Angeles metro area, it is a lifesaver. You do not want to make a wrong turn when trying to get out of downtown LA at night, IMO.
I have the BMW Nav in my Z4MC, and it is OK. However, it's BMW's old system, the user interface is slow (no touch screen), it does not have voice recognition, and the mapping logic is not nearly as good as my portable Garmin Nuvi. Still, it's nice to have an integrated system -- it IS a $$ BMW after all, and I think it should come with some toys. Toys are fun. Factory Nav also keeps clutter out of the car, with no need to plug in a portable unit, and no need to tote it around with me. iDrive well.... I'm not a huge fan of dialing through menus in order to perform simple functions but... I kind of think a car like the M3 should have some luxuries/toys. If you want a strippy sports car get the Elise, as many have said on this forum! |
