335d Water Pump

Does the 335d have a belt driven or electric water pump?

If you notice on Tischer, the diesel pump is significantly cheaper than the other pumps. Wonder what the durability has been with these units as well.

By the looks of the diagram I would say it's belt driven.

I believe the D's are oil cooled. Seems like I read somewhere that theres no evidence that these have water jackets.

They're mechanical (belt driven). As for longevity between the belt driven pumps and electrical pumps, PHYSICALLY the electrical pumps should last longer, since there's no extra set of bearings for the belt driven portion of the pump. Bearing failure between 80,000-120,000 mile for the mechanical pump is a GIVEN.

However, this iteration of the electrical pump seems to be plagued with gremlins. As far as I know, most of the early failures are electrical problems, not mechanical failures.

So I should replace my pump at 100k?

Probably. Those bearings in the pump don't last forever.

Yea e46s had problems with the water pump. Many owners had to swap them out around 80-100k. Some even earlier for preventative maintenance.

They also replaced the thermostat.

I believe that instance had more to do with the impeller, like the E36. Is that correct?

The E46 has a metal impeller. Or maybe I'm thinking of the E46 M3 only. The replacements for E36 pumps are all metal though? Anyway I would like to know the issue with the E90 pumps. If someone could throw out there whether the N52 has an electric pump I would be curious about that too.

N52 does have an electric water pump.

My 2009 Audi Q5 had a plastic impeller and Audi is having problems with their water pumps. They replaced it with a metal one.

It's incredible when it seems the manufacturers don't learn from each other's design flaws.
