Radar Detectors

Anyone know what the best radar detector for us in Canada might be. I heard that the cops here have a censor that tells them if we have a radar detector in the car and also heard that there are some radar detectors that have been able to avoid that censor by sending a fake signal back.

Anyone have a radar, how do you like it and which one are you using?

It is Valentine V1:

I believe most HWY cops in Canada (OPP in Ontario and RCMP in the atlantic Provinces) use laser. It is faster than your detector can put itselt in sleeping mode. So if you would be the only driver they would know you have a radar detector and bye bye detector plus fine... It happened to me in NB. I got my detector seized and a fine. I won't buy one again unless I move out west.

Be careful.

If you live in Ontario, don't bother getting a radar detector. You are just pissing away money as it will eventually be taken away. Its happened to me twice.

radar dectectors

I live in NYS where they are legal but I have read several articles that only the BELL sti (not sure of model number) is the only one that is not seen by spectra
(?sp). The V1 can be seen. If you go to valentine's web site you will note that he says he has not tested it against it but has heard rumors. In ontario if you have one in the car (even your trunk) they will confiscate it even if it is not in use.

I've a K40, but I only use it out of my State and even then only to warn me about road hazards and construction zones.

that is not true. they cannot confiscate it if they cannot prove that you were using it...hence the big ass green signs when you drive across the border that says using it is illegal, please unplug.....

I can't speak for Ontario but in Quebec and the maritime provinces posession of a radar detector, not only its use, is prohibited. Of course if your device is not actvated and in your trunk, it can only found if they perform a search.

A friend of mine has had a Bell 850Ti since the late 1990's (1998 maybe) and has only been caught once with Laser.

It has some stealth technology that makes it invisible to Radar Detector Detectors...............works like a charm.

With laser, you better not be alone because laser is faster than your detector. If their car detects your detector and you are the only one on the road they will know that you have one. Even if you are not speeding they can pull over and legally search your vehicle until they find it. Therefore, if you have one and the officer comes to your window and asks for the device, give it to him because if you don't, he can legally tow your car and disassemble it until they find it (in case of stealth mounting). Some people mentionned the trick of having a pre-address, pre-stamped envelop in your car, to shove your detector in it and seal it in case you are pulled over. This is suppose to work on the premise that the police cannot legally search mail without a warrant (I don't know if this is true). If you are not the only one on the road I don't think they can identify you for certain to be the one in the pack with the radar detector and if you are not speeding at the time they should not be pulling you over.

I had one and the model (brand new in 2002) i had as a sleeping mode in case it detects a radar (once it warns you). One day I was driving in NB and my radar goes awire, I slowed down and the police still stopped me. He came to my window and said: "Driver's liscense, registration, proof of insurance and radar detector please. You were even not speeding sir. Why do you have one?" The officer did not know that I was speeding before my detector warned me (and I was believe me). I handed my device to him and try to bullshit him a story that I got it out west and I thought that the laws changed here about their legallity, blah blah blah...

I don't plan on obtaining a radar detector again unless I move ou west where it is legal.

ElCapitan,

I think your bad experience with the radar detector as a hump and not as a dead end. I'm sure there is a solution to the problem where the laser is faster then the radar detector along with them being able to figure out that we have one.

I think we need to get some of the guys from the states to shine into this as they probably have more experience with radar detectors then we do.

They can still search the car until they find something... Might as well hand it over before they start taking your car appart.
