Wheel Weight Balance

Hey guys, I just purchased my first new winter set up from TireRack last week. I got the Rial Salerno with Dunlop Wintersport 3D's. I opened all the four packages and I found each wheel has different amount of wheel weights.

Wheel 1 = 2 wheel weights.
Wheel 2 = 4
Wheel 3 = 8
Wheel 4 = 10

Is it a bad thing to have too many? I'm new to this. Any recommended setup which ones i should put in the front and back. Thanks

1) wheel number 3 and 4 looks excessive.
2) are all the weights in the same place? or offset (sometimes the Tech is new and keeps adding weights instead of correcting i.e. opposite weights that cancel one another out.
3) When a lot of weights are added it might be an indicator that the wheel is bend. Take your car for a spin and see if it vibrates at elevated speed say 80 MPH.

It is a good idea to keep a record of the weights and there locations on the wheel (make a sketch with zero being your valve). In my case I found on one of my new winter wheels a weight just fell off during handling. BMW then rebalanced my wheel when I took it back to them.

Have a read here at this web site hope it helps.

yeah the weights all side by side. I'm new to this, just ordered off TireRack with their balance and mount option, since they have good reviews. Planning on mounting them tomorrow.

While there is no industry standard, the general consensus of what is too much weight is when it takes more than 1% of the assembly weight to bring it into balance.

Is each stick-on weight a quarter of an ounce? If so...

10 weights on one wheel = 2.5oz

17X8 Salerno wheel 23.5 lbs
225/45R17 = 23.0lbs
Total =46.5 lbs or about 744oz.

1% of that = 7.4 ounces

Even if the weights are .5 oz weights you this is would still be pretty reasonable given the total weight of the wheel and tire. Unless you experience some sort of vibration, then I would have no problems with it.

+1

That seams to be a fair formula 10%

the TPMS sensor accounts for alot of the balancing weights these days. figure that it weighs an oz or two and needs to be countered by weights
