Info from Chicago Autoshow

Hi Guys,

I have found some interesting info after attending the show. One of the spokes women for BMW was there so I thought i would get some questions in about the M3.

She told me that he planned ship date for US is late September. Dealers should have or are shortly recieving notices. She made it a point ot say that it is a planned date because just as the M5 had a planned date, it was delayed slightly. She also said to expect the cabrio about a year later. As for the sedan, but there is no definate answer to if BMW will even release it. Based on the testing conducted BMW will have a clearer idea 4 to 6 months from now. IF it does get approved for production there is a good chance it will be release a year after the Cabrio's release.

She mentioned that it will be a v8 400hp I asked her if it will be in the 400 range and she said it is a 400hp v8.

As for the individual series options/colors, the only car available with individual accents in the US is the 7series. I asked her if one chooses to do ED if they can get those options and she said no.

Just a little hear say from my end.

400 = no way. The 335i is rated at 300, but everyone and their mom knows it's more like 330. Anyone buying an M is aware of these numbers. It's just too close to the 335i. I'm guessing 420 at least if not 444.

Maybe its gonna be marked as 400 and then everyone and their mom will know its really 444?

thats what i hope at least, a lot of 335's are churning out 330-340 whp... which is almost like 400hp

Useless analysis? Probably.

<stated numbers off bmwusa.com>

550i = 360hp ---> M5 = 500hp .... 39% increase
650i = 360hp ---> M6 = 500hp .... 39% increase
Z4 si = 255hp ---> Z4 M = 330hp .... 29% increase

335i = 300hp --->
M3 = 388hp .... 29% increase
M3 = 400hp .... 33% increase
M3 = 417hp .... 39% increase
M3 = 444hp .... 48% increase

My point is simply this, the gap between the highest non-M version of each model & M version really isn't too far off. 29-39% increase in hp numbers. Even at 420 for the upcoming M3, that would place it at the highest % spread of any power increase over its respective sister non-M car.

Just for $hits.

Sorry to rain on you parade; actually I'm not, but do you really think that she is going to tell you proprietary information?

IF it is 400 HP and weighs 1lb. over 3500, I won't be buying one.

We don`t know yet, but 400HP is only wright if the weight off the car is gonna be low. Now IMO that will not be the case, so the HP wil be over 400.
With a 4.0 liter, a 100 HP per liter would be a shame for the best engine builder in the world, even the E46 M3 rated at 105 HP/L.

Conclusion: With all due ........................IMO 400HP rumours are BS

I agree, however I am concerned because although the engine would not set a new benchmark for BMW, a 400 HP engine in a 3500-3600 lb. sedan would still be competitive, when using contemporary power to weight standards.

Isn't the M5's engine a 5 liter which "only" produces 100 HP per liter?

Recall the HP/Liter thread that Swamp (?) made...
If Z M HP/L is pretty close to M5/M6 then we should know what to expect.

With strong competitors in the field, the only thing left for BMW is to make verry clear who is making the best car/engine. So IMO BMW has an obligation to show the world what it`s capable off. Noblesse Oblige, anything less would be a shame, BMW can not afford to make a car that is just a little bit better than for instance the 335i or Audi RS4.......................It must be supreme in all catagories, yes................IMO it is, or has to be the new benchmark...............................

What is the meaning off marking it as 400 HP, while it is IRL 440?

If it is 440............................than say so, if it is 400 than say so...............

No fooling around with numbers, I just want the engine with the amount off HP it is designed to produce.

meaning, the 335 is said to have 300hp, but it really has more like 330hp.

likewise, maybe bmw is taking the same approach to the m3. understating the their hp rating.

Yes, I can understand what you mean, but what is the use for BMW and their costumers to a 10% under rating?.............................doesn`t make any sense to me, why not tell the real number?
If it has IRL more HP than officialy given by BMW, does that make anybody happy?

Or is it a stupid insurance issue?

Hmm, I thought the 335i was underated because if it was rated at 330hp then the new m3 would have to be more than 400hp, so maybe the m3 IS goin to have 400hp since the 335i has been rated at 300hp

i dont know why, but we all know it is a fact that the 335 has more than 300hp.

maybe its their infamous marketing strategy "BMW horsepower is in a class of its own" or "bmw horses are stronger" i fergot the original line, but im sure youve heard of it.

Close---333/3.246=~102.6 hp/liter. If the E92 had the same specific output it would be 410hp at 4 liters.
