Any Computer Techs here?

I'm having problems with my Dell Inspiron 600M. From what I've researched, it seems to be a relatively simple fix (hardware/RAM issue). However, I'm not a computer tech and would hate to ruin the machine even further.

Also, there is no warranty on this and I bought it used off a co-worker for $150, so I'm not gonna go crazy on getting it fixed. I went to a couple places but they want $200 just to "look" at it.

If anyone can help, or point me towards someone who can, that would be great.

If you need to replace RAM; in most Dells is on the underside of the laptop, you need a smaller head phillips screwdriver to remove the plate that covers the RAM. Laptop RAM is SODIMM (small outline dual in-line memory module) which means installs on an almost 45 degree angle and then slides down into place. There is probably a good diagram on Dell's site.

thanks Peckty..........that's good to know.

I'd love to have someone take a look at it who may be able to open the unit and tinker around.

Viral,

As peckty said, your best resource is support.dell.com
They have all the diagrams to do all maintenance yourself.
You just need to be a little DIY savvy.

The problems started last week.........I was working away and all of a sudden it froze. I thought "no biggie" and just restarted.

Upon restarting, I got a black screen which gave me the option to start WIndows in "safe mode". I used safe mode and everything loaded just fine. Then, after a couple minutes, I got a blue screen that had a message of "beginning physical dump of memory".

Ever since then, the following happens:

1) computer won't power-up at all
2) upon power-up, I get the "safe mode" screen again and everything freezes
3) windows starts normally and then everything freezes after a minute

I hope this helps........thanks for everyone's replies -- KEEP 'EM COMING!!

just boot up using a Windows OS disc and try to 'repair', if that doesn't work, just 'reinstall'. It won't take too long. Just that you'll have to reinstall all of your windows programs again.

I had a buddy of mine try that........however, the machine would freeze right after a few minutes so it's hard to make any progress.

when u say everything freezes? what do you mean.. its just frozen on the screen, or has a blank screen, or a blue screen, or what? when specifically does it freeze, is it at the same point? does the bottom of the laptop feel real hot?

I have the same laptop, I want to get a new one... but... trying to watch a budget as I am preparing for other things. I had my hard drive die on me before, but I don't think it is the hard drive, until you can give me a bit more info, I am leaning towards a motherboard issue.

The fan on the processor is probably clogged up with dirt as it was hand me over. The dell 600m has been out for quite some time. I found that when I cleaned out my processor fan, i retained a lil bit of the performance that I bought it at.

If you feel that it is ram. Try and use the pc with each RAM chip by itself.

What you should really do is run the Dell diagnostics tool, I am pretty sure your laptop has it. On bootup, hit F12 for the Boot Menu. One of the options is for "Diagnostic." Run the complete test and chances are it will fail one of it's hardware tests. Then you will know what exactly is wrong.

Why dont you just call dell, giv ehim the service code of your computer and they will run thru all the diagnostics with you and pin point you to what the problem is. As soon as they say its going to cost you X amount of $ you say thank you very much and go to newegg.com and purchase whatever the hardware needed. That is the easiest way for a beguiner to learn exactly whats wrong with their computer, instead of going thru the bios and try it yourself.
