Cost of Oil Change for E90 sedan in BC?

Just curious what you're paying for synthetic oil changes whether from dealer or independents like Nixon. I'm on Vancouver Island and in Victoria, had 1 quote of $170 from an independent. Imagine my shock when my obviously older E30 costs me like $75. I can't imagine the process is that much more work, but is synthetic that much more expensive??

Most shops I worked at (both dealer and independent) non-synthetic oil costs from $4-$5/ litre, while the synthetic can cost up to $10-$16 /litre. Might be cheaper to go to Canadian tires, wal-mart, or super store to purchase the oil in bulk (or when it is on sale), and tell the shop to do the labour only. But that is just my opinion.

Have you try doing it yourself? BMW filter and oil cost about $75.

Most dealerships charge around $140 in lower mainland. I paid $100 for a local mechanic shop.

Haven't tried, but would consider it after 4yr warranty runs out depending on equipment needed. Not actually picking up the car until Sat, so I'll take a look once I get the car.

This looks to explain this very well...

Looks like I really just need ramps and should save some $$. Didn't realize the filter is in the engine bay.

Thanks for the suggestion, didn't even think about it. Thought the process would have gotten more complicated rather than more simple.

thnking to do DIY

Have never done it and contacted few E90 post members and they were willing to lend hands if needed ... I think DIY oil change is definitely doable ..

It's just matter of procuring all the parts needed..

Our dealers here charge about $120 for an oil change. But your car should have 4 years / 80,000 km free maintenance which include oil change during that period. You would have to pay out of your pocket if you want to change your oil more often than what BMW suggested at every 24,000 km. And doing oil change yourself won't void the warranty.

I could mow my own lawn if I wanted to, but I don't, so I pay someone to do it. Same goes with oil changes. To each his/her own.

I guess so, I never really thought the 335i is a baller car though -- every penny saved.

i pay about 100$ for synthetic oil changes from my indy mechanic (but im in montreal). an extra 20 to get my wheels swapped.

if every shop i hit up asked $140 or more for oil, id probably do it myself..oil+wheels is easy enuff to do. but at the price i pay now, its not really worth the trouble.

Local Costco has 6L of Castrol Syntec 5w30 for $40 so 7L cost is approx $52 incl taxes. OEM filter is $20 from dealer, so total cost of parts is about $75. I think cost of ramps, oil pan, etc would be offset after a couple of oil changes. Local dealer charges $140 incl taxes for a change. I'm thinking I'll change oil more often and then occasionally take it to a dealer and see if they do any sort of inspection as a part of the oil change.

Can you let me know the phone number of the dealer who charged $140? I contacted Brian Jessel yesterday and was told the oil change will be around $200(parts + labor). Thanks a lot!
