2007 vs 2009 (335i / Sport)

Hello All,

WTB, 335i Sport Pkg,

OK, The 2007, able to find many out there with relatively low kms for a decent price... (Also some CPO's available but most over priced in my opinion)

2009, not much difference, except some exterior changes and possible oil cooler? (Price comparable to 2007 cpo's)

Does anyone even care if they get an 07 vs 09, taking into account the cost savings etc... OHH YEAH... Is the HPFP failure rate the same between both model yrs?

Cheers,
Speed

The main differences are that you get more equipment as standard on the '09s, and if it has iDrive it has the vastly superior new iDrive (with hard drive, multi-button controller, higher resolution display and generally much better usability). The '09 sedans also have the refreshed exterior styling.

Bluetooth was only available as a stand-alone option, not as part of any of the main packages, for the 2007 models, so it's very difficult to find cars with this option. Also, the M-sport package was not available until '09, or the BMW Individual sound system.

However, fundamentally it is the same car, and you should be able to get a decent CPO'd '07 in the low $30k range compared to mid / high $40k range for an '09. Finance rates are 1.9% for '07s if that is of any value to you.

I can't comment on the oil cooler / reliability of the HPFP.

If you don't want iDrive, and only care about the sport package, then it all depends on how long you want to keep it. I would get the one with a clean service record and longer remaining WARRANTY. It is worth more for a 335i than the other 3 series models, and factory is superior to CPO/extended.

I've had my 335i CPO for three months and so far claimed ~$2K in repairs. Some of it pro-active, since I'm trying to find all issues before factory warranty ends next summer.

Along the same subject, is there a simple way to tell if a 335 has a factory oil cooler?

Yep. Look in the front passenger side wheel well (ie, kinda where the back of the headlamp would be) from outside the car. If there's a slotted metal grate there, it's got the oil cooler.

Good advice to pick the car with the longer warranty coverage, all other things being equal. Also check for warranty claims and avoid any car with mechanical claims.

A BMW employee told me, off the record, to avoid 2007 335. In addition to the usual first-year-growing-pains for the n54 engine, BMW was scrambling in late 2006 to build enough 335i and 335xi to meet customer demands. There are dozens of stories of sport package cars being delivered without oil coolers (standard equipment with sport package). Makes you wonder what else was missed.
