There are some plate bargains to be had at the DVLA auctions - compared to what the plate traders ask for similar ones. I toyed with the idea of bidding for one at the October DVLA auction, a 2x3 (with my initials which had a reserve of £450, I think it went for £550 + all the fees/VAT (about £190 worth). Would have gone nicely on my forthcoming car Instead I invested in one direct from the DVLA online site - should look equally good.
I bet that ALPINA plate generates a fair bit of ineterest. |

I wanted to buy a second plate for a possible future second car (yeah, a bit mad like that) but forgot to put a bid in. It was my Birthday, 20 XXX, went in auction for £1,900 (plus fees), was immediately placed up for sale for £5,995 - doh.
Oh, that fact I didn't have the money was another minor issue .

I have bid on a couple of plates from the DVLA auctions over the past year. They always went for a lot more than I was prepared to pay. I did, however, get an opportunity to buy onsold lots at their reserve and picked up a great plate for £400 (plus fees, so c.£550 all in).
I get the catelogue emailed to me as a matter of course and always look out for a good'un. You always get the big dealers offering plates for sale that are due to be auctioned at DVLA....I got offered one with my initials (by RegTransfers) for £5,995+ VAT (one time only early bird price ) that had a reserve at the aution of £1,900 plus fees. Decent mark-up for every sucker they trick into that deal!!

Unfortunately the traders are already one step ahead. They just hoover up all decent plates that are going begging. I did a blind bid for my current plate but got outbid by a fiver by a trader; I hunted him down and made him an offer which he eventually accepted. I saw my arse basically and refused to let this guy beat me for MY plate . Who's the fool??? Probably me . Oh, I miss the days I had spare money .

I bought my plate in person at a DVLA auction.
Private punters are outnumbered probably 15 or 20 to 1 by traders in the room. As said by others, they hoover up so much stock, it's unreal. LIterally, one guy had his bidder number in the air for half the day. They lift them up and hold them up. However, I paid about £2k plus the fees for mine. The trader I was bidding against (and eventually beat) came over at the end of the auction, congratulated me, and told me he would have advertised that plate at a minimum of £4,995. So going to one of these auctions and bidding in person saved me a big chunk of money. Was a good experience too.
