just ordered a porter cable 7424xp polisher

Just ordered a porter cable 7424xp kit I know it's winter and shouldn't have bought it but it was cheap with pads. Good thing I have a heated garage.

For starters, always use it on a clean surface so you don't end up grinding dirt into the paint.

Generally, people throw away the foam pad that it comes with and get a variety of different pads for use with different kinds of products. Lake Country seem to be the most popular. You can use it from anything from applying wax to polishing out swirl marks or reducing the appearance of scratches using a combination of the right product and pad.

Go visit autopia.org for endless discussion of this sort of thing. Some people take detailing very, very seriously. I try to give my car the once over twice a year: wash and clay the car to remove as much dirt as possible; reduce any major scratches with a scratch/swirl remover; polish the entire car; then apply a coat of sealant. It takes me pretty much all day to do that, but for some enthusiasts, it's just a start. Scratch/swirl removal seems to require a lot of patience to get anywhere with a random orbital like the 7424, but claying, polishing, and waxing/sealing can really keep the car looking nice at the cost of a couple Saturdays a year.

Time to try out this new version of optimum no rinse in my heated garage

I took a whiff and it smelled much better than the old formula i had last year.
