Buy an extended warranty?

Hey everyone,

I'm picking up a 2007 e90 335i tomorrow, and I have the option to buy an extended warranty. The car currently has a little less than 42,000 miles, and the 50,000 mile warranty runs out in July of next year.

Apparently I can buy a 100,000 mile/5 year extended warranty for $2,400 at the dealership, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. I've read up on several of the 'issues' these cars have, namely the HPFP, and I know that's no problem considering BMW's recall/warranty coverage.

Keep in mind this particular model has a clean title and service record. It's only been in the shop for routine maintenance as far as I can tell.

Would you pull the trigger on the extended warranty, or let it ride? Thanks in advance guys.

Their asking price is too high.

Otherwise, I say go for it. Injectors or vanos solenoids are also prone to fail....and aren't covered under the pump warranty.

Let it ride and save the money for any future repairs. Warranty is just money upfront IMO. Had my car since 05 and so far only a service schedule which ran me about 700 and change. Did some myself and saved some money.

I would definitely get the extended warranty, and $2,400 isn't really bad.

"does the extended warranty include free oil changes and all that stuff?"

NO, not the extended warranty, but the extended maintenance plan would do that.

For a 2007 335, I would never buy one without it as unreliable as mine is. Bought it at 24000 miles, at 28000 miles right now, having to go back for dealer visit #6 in less than 4 months.

If BMW would give me the money back for the car I would let them take it and never buy another.

What is the decent price for extended warranty? From what I read 3000-3500 is the average...

Why not forego the 2007 model and try to get a newer 09 or 10 with much of the original warranty still left, if there are some available??

If they have them and they are not CPO'd, pay the extra $1500 to CPO it and you'll get another 2 year warranty on top of the remainder of the original 4 yr warranty.

Just trying to make sure you're considering all options.

And so you know, I just bought (Sept) an 09 328i that was a former service loaner and would do it again in a second. Fantastic car.

This is an insurance decision. The average buyer is going to get less than $2,400 in repairs, otherwise the company would go out of business. On the other hand a minority of buyers are going to have major problems that cost far more than $2,400.

Only you can decide how your cash flow/savings/tolerance for risk balance out. And the right answer for you may not be the right answer for someone else.

I totally agree! Sometimes you gotta roll the dice. Personally I like insurance. Within the last 3 months I had to replace vanos solenoid, HPFP and now all the injectors. I have a CPO warranty but if I didn't I'd be coming out of pocket for those repairs.
