brake squeal

my brakes have only about 8K miles on them, brand new brakes all around when I purchased it certified. The dealer said I should get about 20-40K miles on new brakes before they should need changing, dependent of course on how I drive it, but I am getting this slight squeal just before a full stop. I try to be gentle on the brakes, but I find that the more gentle I am trying to be, the more they will squeal. Doesn't happen when I brake harder, nor does it happen all the time. It is embarrassing, because I know the brakes are still in good shape. Is there something I can do to help this, or do I just have to ride the brakes harder?

This was a huge issue for me in my 2008 and I was repeatedly told (even by friend's at the dealership) that this was caused by the brake sensor rubbing on the bmw brakepads and that there was nothing that could be done about it.

I think the only way to remedy it is to switch to different brake pads.

No, the way to remedy it is to buy a new sensor (granted the one you have is worn) and tie it off to the side. However now YOU have to keep track of the wear.

I had this squeal as well and I just changed my rear rotors and pads...no more squeal. When that sensor starts to wear I bet the squeal will come back.

My brake squeal was so loud that friends driving next to me always thought something was wrong with my car. It was SO obnoxious. Luckily I have a new 2011 now. Knock on wood.

New pads/rotors don't matter...unless they really are squeaking.

But the more common squeaking culprit is the sensor. Replacing the pads and rotors also requires the replacement of the sensor. The sensor does not start wearing right way...it takes some time for the pad material to become even with the sensor and thus the reason why after a brake change, the squeal is gone.

Like I said before, you can tie the sensor off to the side.

I had the same problem but the dealer fixed it for free since I am still under warranty.

You should probably change out the pads... Cool Carbon pads are quiet and more importantly they're $85 off currently!

Mine would squeal even when I wasn't on the brakes. I'd be crusing at 5-10 mph and it would squeal obnoxiously loud the entire time. I went on a cruise and people were asking me if something was wrong with my car. Of course bmw just said multiple times that it's "normal".

SAME thing here with my 08 E92,
only squeals at low speed acceleration
not even on braking. Gone to the dealership
twice & they refuse to replace them

they say its BMW's
"special brakes"...very special
