i think you can also unplug a little plug in the trunk on the 1 series. I heard it leaves a hidden code however.

Just use a zip tie to tie off the vacuum hose that is connected to the exhaust. No need to disconnect it. MAKE SURE YOUR CAR HAS BEEN OFF FOR A WHILE, the exhaust pipe can get really hot.

Should look like this when finished: http://img177.imageshack.us/i/golfmod.jpg/
(Not sure what car that's from, but you get the idea).

Did this to my 128 - it made a significant change (for the better) to the sound, especially under hard acceleration. It only takes 30 seconds to do this mod. By far the biggest bang for the buck mod you'll ever do.

mine is a 128 as well and i unplugged the hose in the trunk. i did not want to physically touch the tube and stuff was just a little weirded out by the zip tie method.

i did the trunk unplugging method to my previous 335 n drove for about 2 years with 0 issues from the car or even the dealer so i stuck with that method. I was just not aware the 128 had that as well.

sounds nice, raspy growl around 1-2500 rpm, and when you WOT you really hear the exhaust and no tjust engine noise.

i posted a post on the DIY gold tee mod section. you have to take out the cover on inside the trunk ont he drivers side. there are two compartments, the far right one, the one closes to the wheel is the one you have to slightly pull out, but make sure u dont rip the carpet padding. you will see a switch, with a metal clip. push the in the metal clip and pull out the top portion of the switch. it will fold the flapper in until you plug it back in.

Don't want to start any drama with this question, but I'm interested to see if anyone else noticed the same thing I did with this mod on the 128i.

I blocked off the vacuum hose with a barb connector and rubber cap, and put a cap over the acuator as well. It was absolutely airtight.

I noticed when I pulled away in first gear, that sometimes the car would stumble for a split second, like it was bogging down. Then it'd pick up as normal.

This only happened sometimes, but I reversed the mod to see if it'd help and sure enough, it hasn't done it again since.

I can't see how something so far back in the system could affect the engine in this way, but my own 'evidence' really looks like it did.

Anyone else run into anything similar?

Methinks your brain is playing tricks on you.

There's no reason the engine would be bogged down with less backpressure when the flap is open. Now tie up that hose again and enjoy the growl of your engine at lower RPM and under lower load!

thats a pretty interesting observation and makes perfect sense actually.
part of the reason why im not into the whole "golf tee" wire, zip tie etc etc etc method. the knowledge i picked up over the years with my 335 i understood that i dont want to mess with ANYTHING physically..unless i am replacing the entire thing (intake, exhaust).. also reason why i never did those DIY blow off valve methods..cuz in BMW the smallest little thing plays a huge role in the overall car. i think what you did probably confused and tricked the car, and in low RPMs it was like "wait whats going on" and got clogged.

does anyone know if this can affect the brakes/brake booster?

Recently ive been feeling that it takes more pressure for me to hit the brakes, and they don't start doing anything untill i have already 1/2 way pressed the pedal. I've had the ziptie for about 3 months now and the problem has recently started about last week. I heard that the brake booster is also connected to the vacuum pump, not sure what it does though.

well thats not good lol. need to do some more research on that but i dont understand what that pump would have anything to do with the brakes.. doesnt it just control the flapper in the pipe and amount of exhaust coming out of it? and if it is... i wonder what it regulates or monitors as far as the brakes.

The concept of a brake booster is to keep a bladder in vacuum so that when the brake pedal is depressed, a check valve opens to let air in. This change in air pressure inside the bladder assists in pushing the piston in the master cylinder which then pushes the brake fluid into the individual brake calipers. So if you had a vacuum leak, the brake booster will somehow be affected.

That's how my dad explained it to me when I was a kid...

makes sense, now the question is, is it the same vacuum that closes/open the flapper?

I tried this mod with a zip tie method yesterday. No lights no performance lost no nothing so far and it took me less than 10 sec. It is just a tiny bit louder I would say about 7-8% more growl at idle and very low rpm? Nothing impressive happen but is it worth doing it? Yes, because it is free.

Should be. The vacuum comes from the engine intake.

The flap in my car has become quite noisy after just 5k miles. At least I hope it's the flap or something sounds pretty wrong.

I'm going to redo the mod again and see if it makes the noise go away.
