Question about SMG tranny
Hey all.
I was reading posts about smg and came up with a question since SMG is totally new thing to me. (unlike manual or full auto tranny) I am pretty sure that I won't be going into FI because...I can't afford it but Let's say you get your FI and rebuild your motor, do internals, etc. How does SMG owners do it when it comes down to rebuilding including tranny? I haven't seen a single SMG owner with FI. |

There are lots of 650+ HP SMGs around with no issues, they are very strong. Most ive seen however is 700HP
Just for kicks since you havent seen any SMGs with FI www.loaded.se or go to you tube and type in Supercharged M3 CSL. |

I don't know exactly how much it can take, I have never seen an M3 gearbox fail because of too much power...Google it.
But It can take 650HP perfectly well because there are several of them around with no problems. And if you need more than that much power, then you have a problem . -Pete. |

rebuilding tranny cant be that bad if it's just a manual tranny with paddles on steering wheel. |

With the SMG the E46 M3 actually can take more beating than without it, because the computer controls the clutch perfectly, which an individual with manual transmission will never do... So if you have a turbo charger on your E46 M3 or something else insane ( ) , you're probably safer with the SMG (and a race clutch ). The E39 M5 used to have a huge problem because it was manual only and had so much torque, especially with people who did a lot of city driving tended to burn through clutches once a year or so, or unless they installed a more durable racing clutch... I know of tens of E39 M5's where clutches had to be replaced, and I know personally at least 5 people who have destroyed the clutch on the E39 M5 while driving normally...

picking tranny is PITA when you get a car :/
just wondering, one of the best feature when you get SMG is launch control right? does that come in manual as well? |

Launch control is one of the "fun" gizmo features, yes. Obviously it doesn't come with a manual. With a manual, the launch control is the driver :-) (you know, rev up to optimal revs, and drop the clutch )

You really need to drive both to know which one you'll like. It's a very personal thing. But as a default, I would go for the SMG. It is really wonderful on the M5/M6 already, and will definitely be so much better on the new M3 that I just can't wait...

SMG definitely, if it is what I expect it to be.
Don't get me wrong, I love manuals, I love heel-and-toeing and the perfect downshift like anyone who loves manuals and the joy of driving and feel of control you get out of it, but still on the track (for example), with SMG, you can have more "brain cycles" for the perfect driving performance, instead of using up your cycles for the shifting, like somebody said well in another thread. I'd love it if it could have both modes... Still have the clutch pedal for the manual mode, and with a flip of a switch, activate the SMG mode... But I don't see that happening any time soon. Or maybe it wouldn't be that hard? But if there'll be double clutches, then it will be hard. But with SMG-III, that might even be doable. But as far as the M5 or M6, I don't see a point for a manual with those engines. And with the upcoming M3, it's very close to the limit that there would be a point to a manual on it either... On the other hand, on the Z4 M Coupé and it's straight six, I don't see a point for an SMG - it's so much more fun with a manual. (Official reason it doesn't have SMG is that since it had to have a new gearbox (the M3 gearbox wouldn't fit), SMG hasn't been developed for that gearbox, and probably won't be.) It all depends on the overall character of the engine and the car and all things combined... so very much. Best regards, Jussi |

Hey just wanted to say. Don't worry about what other assholes say about u driving a stick or not. It very simple to learn, should you need too. But your SMG will wipe them off the roads every time. They are immature little shits. Ignore then and get what you like.
My personal choice is SMG ftw! :rocks: |

Well said. Learning to drive stick is one or two days on the track with an instructor, tops. Or you can learn yourself and it won't take long, just get good instructions and practice on a closed area. Driving stick like a real pro (who do around 200-250ms shifts) is another thing, but 99.99% of people can't do that anyway, so don't worry. I can't, either. I think my best shift times are around 0.5s or a little under if I really push it hard, and I don't need to be able to shift faster, because I don't compete (and most competition cars have SMG type automatic shifters, that's where the SMG technology came from - F1 cars!) ah thanks JK42.
i am not that great with understanding stuff but anything that you say...it just hits my mind. thank you replicat. haha you got that right... i am like the only person who drives an auto compare to my friends and you know...they beat on you for driving an auto hahaha people are pressuring me to get a manual because it's more fun. their argument is that SMG is indeed fast but how many time would you go to track for it? well i know that i will barely go to track but i will be rocking on the road for sure! you guys are pulling me back to SMG from manual now...hahaha... i love you guys |

Good to hear that. The SMG is the way to go. Its not for just spirited driving/track use. Its for being lazy and not wanting to clutch it, every morning at 7AM in traffic. And so that a wife/girlfriend will not complain that she can't drive stick...

Get a M6 meanwhile if you can't wait. Preferably the 550hp Hartge edition (but NOT with the Hartge bodykit - it's ugly as hell! which is unusual for hartge. The kidneys make me want to throw up.)

Well, there's lots of E46 M3 SMGs out there waiting for buyers right now I'm sure. A late 2004 or 2005 model and strap on a compressor and you'll have a nice BMW rocket while waiting. Or the Z4 M Coupé (although it also has pretty long waitlists - about 5-6 months from order in Europe, but I'm sure some stores in the US have it on the showrooms?)
