Angry Last BMW I will ever own - rant

Service Engine Soon light came on so I took it to the dealer. Sensor is bad, sensor is part of the radiator, repairs over $1200. Car has slightly under 51K miles on it - just out of warranty. When I asked for some consideration, I was told that with the recession BMW is no longer giving any good-will warranty - you're either covered or you're not.

And - unbelievably - I just decided to buy it out of the lease. Did the title transfer at DMV less than a week ago. What a mistake!

Next time I will listen to my head and not my heart.

how much did the car cost and why would you buy a car out of warranty?

Didn't you have your car certified before you bought it?

If something happened at 60,000, 70,000, or more miles no. But if it happened literally within a thousand miles of the warranty running out I would do a goodwill fix. If they had done that the might have secured themselves another purchase from him in the future. Instead, he now has the impression that things fail right after the warranty is over and BMW doesn't give two shits about him and they've now lost a future purchase.

Shit happens, its a car. My mobo on my comp died at just after its warranty period, guess I ended up getting a new one at full price. Things fail, and its at the their discretion of it they want to fix it or not.

I do think its kind of crap they dont, but its business.

Order sensor, take to independent shop, pay half that price. Dealer = never a visit for me when warranty is gone.

I do agree with this, but fact is, even if they denied me, I wouldnt care too much about further purchases. I love driving the car far too much. I havent felt another car feel so good.

And lets face it, I think this is going to be the standard for MORE companies across the board then the good will stuff. They are cutting corners any way they can. Be happy we get 4yr/50k, coulda been 3/36k like the rest.

I can understand the rant, as I was denied a goodwill fix on a seal that was put on the door on front pass. side WRONG from them. But since I didnt notice it until my CPO kicked in they will not good will it.

They want around $450 for part and install for the work. And Cpo doesnt really cover much, but when I got my car the salesmen kept telling me its an extension of BMWs wide coverage for your piece of mind, all besides the Maint. stuff is covered.

But being a dummy and taking him at his word, later I found out that NO its not the same.

But you live and learn. I was going to buy or lease a newer ride from Bmw but I am thinking of jumping ship to another luxury brand.

Certification has nothing to do with this. To the op We are doing a $1500 job on an 04 Acura MDX at our shop right now. Everything breaks with time.

Only maintenance is covered on the extended warranty, IIRC

Write a polite but persuasive email to BMWNA Customer Service. I had a similar issue about 6 years ago with my 528i. Dealership would not extend an olive branch for a just out of warranty alternator, but BMWNA eventually refunded me the money.

Oh...and BTW...you got royally ripped off...The level sensor is not part of the radiator. It fits into the expansion tank and can be bought separately.

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...23&hg=17&fg=05

Radiator lists for $312.54. You could install this your self in one day...max..with one arm tied behind your back.

Do yourself a favor and have the codes read from the cars OBD port by someone else...this smells fishy.

Maintenance coverage can be extended independently of the "extended vehicle protection" which is more akin to the warranty the car comes with. It's not 100% congruent, but it covers parts/breakdowns, not just maintenance items.

It has EVERYTHING to do with this.

If he had had it certified, it would have been covered and it would have cost him $50.00.

Maybe you don't have Certified BMWs in Canada, but the OP is in the states. This would have all been covered, less a $50.00 charge.

I have to side with you and the op here. Of course on paper BMW was right, but is a little bit of labor and a part they get for much less than they charge us for worth losing business?

Yes it does. If people don't want to spend around $1200 to get their car Certified when they buy it off of lease, then what do they expect.

Before any BMW hits 100K or 6 years, they are BOUND to spend more than that in repairs (Certification does not cover maintenance, that is seperate and I can pay for that myself).

I'd never buy a BMW that was over warranty and not certified, not even my own....

That's my point. I didn't ask for a free repair, I asked for "consideration". They chose not to provide any. I choose not to buy another BMW no matter what the dealer or BMWNA do in the future.

In customer service training you learn that when you make a customer happy they tell one or two people. When you make a customer unhappy they tell ten or twenty people.

I fire BMW as my automobile supplier.

this happened to my car under warranty and they did what the OP said - they replaced the entire radiator.
