Exclamation M3 import from UK?

Hi,

Ive just joined this forum, looks like a great source of info. And can I say that the M3 has to be one of the coolest looking cars on the street!

What I wanted to ask is this,

Would an M3 imported from England sell in Aus for roughly the same price as a Aus plated M3???

The reason I ask is that im living in London at the moment and trying to decide whether or not to buy an M3 then bring it back with me in a year or so when I come back to Aus.

My next question is which model would be easiest to sell on, convertable or hard top, auto or manual?

Ill be looking at something around 2005 - 2006.

Thanks in advance for any response,

Pete

I doubt an import would achieve the same price as an Oz compliance plated vehicle. Specs vary widely betwen countries. If you're talking 2005 - 2006 I'd imagine you're talking E46 M3. Honestly, if I were in the market and I was looking at two cars, I'd go the Oz compliant one unless the import was significantly cheaper.

Make sure you meet the import rules:

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/index.aspx

I expect on a trade you'll be offered AUD$20k less than an Australian delivered car IF a dealer will even trade it. I can guarantee a BMW dealer won't. A standard M3 isn't special enough IMO, I'd only consider something like a GTS or CSL.

Having said that, I doubt a GTS or CSL would meet ADR and therefore would not be registered for road use.

The car market here is so protected against imports that it is financially impractical to bring a car in unless it's a Euro delivery with the compliance plate fixed at the factory in Munich. Even then you'd only do that for emotional reasons - certainly not financial.

A CSL does meet it, I did this. Realistically this is the easy part. The hard part is getting approval.

This was my thinking...

I thought under the personal import scheme it would be worthwile?

If an M3 cost me £15,000 - $23000

Taxes and gst to import at around $13000
Shipping $3000

Total less than $40,000

An aussie M3 low mileage 2005 - 2006 is worth about $65,000 isnt it??

Try this site,

http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/...1649 1680 1557

There are a few there...

As the boys said above.. this would be worth it, assuming you could get a RHD one at around the same % below these prices as you mentioned with a standard E46.

You'd get offered $35K on a trade at a guess. I personally wouldn't import a standard E46 M3, too many locally delivered cars which are generally a higher spec than UK delivered cars.

The car below is a UK import and has been for sale for around 2 years:

You'd have more luck with an E92 i would have thought, probably too many cheap E46's around these days

No you won't and they will always be worth less.

There's a 335i UK personal import for sale now, $52k which is $15-20k below aussie models. I personally wouldn't buy one.

Thats a massive discount. What if it had a full BMW history from the UK and the owner who imported was the seller?

Wouldn't matter. They don't support grey imports.

The Australian vehicle market and compliance requirements are so highly regulated and protected you'd have a pretty hard time getting it here. Even if you did get it here you would have to jump through some serious hoops to get it on the road.

If it were easy we'd all be doing it and the Aust market would die...that's why the market is so regulated and protected.

Or you could negotiate a deal on this one

I can gaurantee this one has more options, is in better condition, has been driven in non CBD conditions and will have a better resale value down the road because it is an Australian Complianced and BMW Factory delivered car.

Not an M3, but plenty of others. Make sure you read and can comply with the requirements listed here:

I would suggest if you are a car enthusiast to get a car for yourself that will cost you a lot less over in the UK than in Aus with the thought of enjoying the car here, rather than for profit.

Recent changes to personal importing rules means you can only ship a car to Oz once every 5 years after owning the car here for the last 12 months continuously unless it falls under a list of exotic cars e.g Fez, Lambo. Different cars will have a different margins compared to the same car in Oz. Karman is a good website to get more info on logistics of it all or check the below link.

Custom Valuation

Thanks guys. I understand there is a 5% duty and 10% gst to be levied on the Custom Valuation of the car, which is based on a X% of the OZ street value of the car.

Two questions come to mind...

1. How is the street value of the car determined? e.g is it using the redbook value?
2. How do i know what the X% is going to be? The example of the Audi TT shows 65%, but i have read it could be as low as 50%.

Many thanks.

Normally it gets undervalued to Australian delivered cars because it is an import. I wouldn't worry about this, it certainly won't be any dearer than the Redbook.

Many thanks.

Can someone recommend any good companies in the UK or Aus to help with the process?

Anyone heard of Cargo Online or Excess International? These came up on a google search.
