Just got a 335i...Few questions.

Hello everyone. Was looking for a 335 for a little over six months until last week when I purchased one. Great car. Having so much fun.

I have a few questions and figured guys would be the ones to have some answers.
  1. I've read a lot about the turbo/actuator rattles and think I may have this problem. When the car is in neutral and I rev the motor to about 3500 rpm I hear a tinny noise when the revs drop. Sounds almost like a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel. From what I can tell it sounds like it's coming from the engine area. I have a service appointment next week to have them check this noise out, just thought I'd ask.
  2. Having driven only manual cars on a daily basis for over 15 years, I'm fairly new to how automatics should feel. I've noticed when coming to a stop light/sign I feel the car downshift. Nothing very aggressive but certainly noticeable. Almost like a manual car downshifting to first right before you stop. This normal for this steptronic tranny?
  3. The chrome trim around the windows has some water stains. Any suggestions on a product or method for getting rid of these marks? Not sure if chrome polish would be safe.
Thanks everyone for sharing any insight. I appreciate all that this forum has to offer. Certainly helped during my pursuit of my 07' 335i.

I have the same exact issue with the noise. I brought it in, they said it was the exhaust valve, near the end of the tailpipe, drivers side. The valve is closed when you cold start the car, then it opens up when the exhaust system warms up.

Take it to the dealer, I did, and they ended up ordering parts. Tomorrow they should have it fixed.

2. You got the Auto??!!

3. True water stains should come off with distilled water, or filtered water. Water stains are the minerals left by water that used to contain dissolved solids. Distilled will contain none, so it should wipe it away.

Yup got the auto. First new car since married. Had to get something we could both drive. Still got a 98 M3 manual to have fun with. Still curious about the jerky feel while stopping.

The stains don't wash off with car wash. Haven't tried any distilled water though.

Step does downshift - this is one of the things about it that really sold me on it, it really drives itself like I would drive a MT, it just does it itself

If the water stains are on chrome, try mixing some water and Vinegar together (60% water and 40% Vinegar) then use a towel and just put that mixture on the chrome water spots...should remove that remaining ring...it worked on my rims on my truck...good luck tomorrow at the dealer....

i havent noticed that noise before, but there is a valve that shuts off one of the exhaust pipes when the engine starts cold to warm up...then it opens. Try feeling it with your hand...its the pipe behind the driver, no exhaust comes out when cold...tripped me out at first when i was buying the car.

The trim on my rear passenger side door has really bad water spots. Looks like crap. I'd really like to replace it with all black, but don't want to spend $300+ on the trim.

I haven't tried any of the suggested remedies yet. I'll give it a go this weekend. Just bugs me everytime I see them.

I like that this auto seems to downshift - slows the car down like a manual does when you back off the gas, unlike American automatics that float in neutral with no loss of speed when off the gas.

I have the same spots/cloudiness on the chrome window trim on my '08 at well. My detail guy says that it's in the clearcoat/coating they put over the chrome and won't buff/clean off. My dealer might do something if I bitch about it.

Interesting. I'm sure as the earth is round that this is a stain on my car. Oh well. I'll mention it when I go in for service for suspected actuator/turbo issues.

It might well be. The detail guy said that it was stains/pitting/whatever but it was in the surface clearcoating, and the only way to remove it was to scrub all the coating off, leaving the chrome underneath. In other words, he thought it was not something a little metal polish would cure as the problem was not tarnish to the metal.

Or... he could be wrong. I'm curious what you and others find out about this.

Yeah...don't think so. I can live with some for minor stains. Thanks though.

The ticking wastegate is a recurring problem that BMW refuses to fix. They will reprogram your car with software that keeps the wastegate open at low RPM. Avoid having the dealer fix this, because you trade A LOT OF POWER away to get rid of the noise. The ticking stops, but so does the boost.
There is an easy DIY fix it instead:
