smelly AC/AIR

just recently i've gotten this moldy smell comming out of the car, even when i put it on AC.. its like off and on...
does this have something to do with the air filter? if so, am i able to buy a new filter and maybe DIY it?

I'm not familiar with a "moldy" smell, but living in FL when it gets really hot and humid the AC will kick out a funky smell whenever I switch between the AC and just the vent.
For example, if it's been a hot day and I've been running the AC it's fine. But if it gets cooler in the evening and I want to open the sunroof and the windows I'll switch the AC to the vent or re-circ option and it will spew out a musty smell that's really annoying.
Is that what you're talking about?

Anyone else?

Definitely, the cabin air filter also has charcoal to eliminate odors.. it's a 10 minute DIY, just 8 screws under the hood towards the firewall.. 20 bucks when not buying from a dealer.

My thread about changing it:

blasting the heat on full blast for a few minutes might help. Otherwise buy a bottle of frigi fresh on ebay, and spray that into the the intakes located behind the cabin filter (you will need to remove the fillter).

And in the future, make sure to shut off your ac a few minutes before you get to your destination, and just leave the fan on. If you just shut off your car when you get to your destination (with the ac on), that will cause the funky smell to build over time. Something about condensation building up so you need to leave teh fan on for a few mins.

i just started having the same problem this summer for the first time. i took it to the dealer and they replaced the filter but the smell is still there. my service rep said they do a air duct cleaning and disinfecting for $250, which i opted against unless everything else fails.

i just ordered one of those air deodorizer bombs from bavarian auto, so i guess ill report back with my results when i get it.

I had the same problem and they replaced my microfilter. All good to go after that...just give it a couple days I guess.

+1 This will happen with any car.
