Hey guys, I am approaching 50K on my 2007 335i. Should I get the extended warranty and/or the extended service packages? For all you guys over that mark, what are your suggestions?

Also, I live in NoVa. Is there any other non BMW service location you guys go to?

Extended warranty: 335i, twin turbos, yes.

Extended service: if you don't know how to DIY or don't have a good indy then yes.

I'm in the same boat, not sure what to do yet. I know for sure I don't want the extended maintenance, but the warranty... dunno.

Yes in the same boat here. My car is CPO but contemplating whether or not to buy the extended maintenance from BMW.

The maint. waranty is priced at $2095 from the Stealership. From what I gather it covers brakes, oil changes, fluids, filters, etc (am i missing something major? )

I drive about 25K Miles a year so this warranty would last me maybe 2 years MAX!

BMW will do oil changes once a year or every 15K. So In two years for me that will be around 3 oil changes

DIY Oil change costs roughly $100 with oil, filter, paying my friend to do it haha
$100 x 3 Jobs = $300

Brakes they do what every 30K? I Could maybe get 2 Brake jobs out of them?

Pads and rotors from Tischer are roughly $300 (Shipping included) + $50 to pay my friend to do it
$350 x 2 Jobs = $700

Lets throw in $400 for filters, fluids, etc

Added up thats $700 + 400 + $300 = $1400 worth of maintenance

$1400 vs. $2095..... decisions decisions....

From what I am gathering I dont think the extended maintenance would be worth it for me.

BUT If I am mistaken or am missing something major PLEASE tell me so I can make a choice before i hit 50K Miles (currently at 49,5xx)

you also have to look at the fact that you will probably do oil changes every 5-7.5k miles, as well as different intervals for other fluids than what BMW will do. So if you buy the plan from BMW, you pay for their intervals, plus the DIY/labor costs of doing out of interval services.

The main benefit of getting service from the dealer is that you can get a loaner, and you know it will be done right/covered if a mistake is made.

I agree - I dont feel comfortable with doing oil changes every 15k miles.

What other fluids are normally changed by BMW and when?

As far as the loaner goes - I dont really need a loaner while they do a brake job or an oil change as these are a few hours work max. (Its nice to have - but necessary? Prob not)

I have a buddy that used to work at a toyota dealership as a mechanic so he does my labor for me but I dont see where a big mistake can be made with simple maintenance crap like oil and brakes?

Anything thats major and not maintenance should be covered by my CPO Right?

My brake light would come on every 10k miles, so extended maintenance was a no brainer. Inspection 2 at 60k is costly through the dealer. I drive hard, and I got my moneys worth with extended maint.

Dealer tries to sell ext maintenance for $2k, but they will sell it to you for $1395 cheapest cost. Don't pay cost on their advertisements, they will lower the extended maint and warranty prices significantly.

Wow really? $1395 is not bad then!!! What did you tell them to get down to this number?

How much is it?

For a BMW, a BMW 100K extended warranty can help you sell it and offset quite a bit of the cost, but not all, of course. Are you planning on owning during the extra 2 year period?

Statistically you won't "win" and get more in benefits than it costs of course (they want to make a profit, after all), but does give some peace of mind and insurance from a really catastrophic repair bill. Then again, there are some holes in the plans (not bumper to bumper) so read carefully.

When I had older 5 series cars I spent about $1,000/yr on repairs and maint. But at some point someone paid much more than that when they finally died.

I'm not a fan of the prepaid maint plans. I guess you'd have to tally up what you'd spend otherwise.

PS. While I also did a lot of maint on older cars myself, you might consider the fact that a DIY brake job will not look as good as one done by a BMW shop to a prospective buyer who knows to check your maint records carefully. Oil changes are one thing, brake work is another.

I debated on the maintenance extension as well, until I saw coupon on Passport BMW's site that saved me 10% and that pretty much sealed the deal. Went down on Wednesday, cut a check for $1,895 and walked out a happy man.
