break in question

Hello, I just got my new 330i the dealer told me that I do not have to break in the engine, so I took the words for granted and I floored it on my second day :S and I kept doing so ... now I read somewere here on the forum that it is mandatory to break in ... am I screwed ?? :S:S:S

There are different schools of thought when it comes to this--some recommend to flog it some just say drive it like a baby. I would say the worst things you could do during break in are driving at load and revs before the engine is warmed up, constantly driving short distances, driving at high load in a high gear. Avoid those things and just drive normally and you should be fine.

probably not screwed but the manual does recommend a break in period. Perhaps one should read those pesky manuals afterall

Some say flogging it will make the engine stronger due to the pistons sealing better. However a break in that went easy and with the car being babied means the other components, like the drivetrain, wont be stressed prior to proper seating.

Unless the "some say" crowd has done controlled testing to include tear-down inspections of components, I would go with what the manufacturer recommends.

well I do let it worm up and I continue driving it like a baby for the first 15 mins but then I start flooring it from time to time, I do not keep flooring it for a long time, I just accelerate to a certain speed and then I cool down I do not carry heavy weights while doing so, just me in the car, and I don't floor it on up hills. the reason why I thought it shouldn't be driven like a baby is that oil change is required on 12000 km, I thought only cars that should undergo careful break in are those which require oil change in 1000 km.

Again, , you are not suppose to warm up the car. No more posts until you

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

I've read the manual. I know the part where it mentions not warming up. However, that probably doesn't mean you should beat on the engine while it is cold, either. I'm sure BMW meant that somewhere between Grandma and NASCAR is appropriate.

1200km, that's the break-in period for engine, clutch, and brake pads.

500km for tires.

Except for tires (where you can flat spot them), if you can only doing it once or twice, it will be fine. The more important part is not to overload your car (with too many people or "stuff") before 1200km.

It means not to idle the car more than a few seconds for warm-up. Instead, immediately drive off after starting - but drive gently (low revs, less than 1/2 throttle, etc.) for the first few miles.
