Fränkische Schweiz - model train and motorrad museums

(sorry for the double post)

Hi Gang,

Last weekend I went for a drive into my “little swiss” nature park. The real name is “Fränkische Schweiz”, but most Americans call it the “little swiss”. It is a state park in Bavaria, one of the nicer ones in all of Germany. Fränkische Schweiz is well known to be a Nature Preserve, fishing, camping kayaking and nice curvy roads for the motorcycle lovers. The BurgenStrasse (Castle Road) runs right thru it too – so there are many castles and ruins - to stop and look at along the drive. Did I mention this area is very picturesque! It also happens that they make some great beers in this region too. In some of the caves here they have found dinosaur bones – and cave man fossils and such. I have driven in and around here often, and I am always discovering new great roads to have fun on.

I have this book on the Fränkische Schweiz attractions. I had been meaning to go visit a small model train museum and motorcycle museum in this area. Last weekend I did just that.

First the model train museum. It is not really a museum per se, but rather one mans collection of model trains and “train stuff”. I think it got so out of hand that he built this detached little guest haus – to house all of his stuff. Its worth a look. Just for something to stop for a few minutes and look around.

For my second stop I traveled to this eccentric guy who collects old motorcycles. I am not really into bikes, but anything mechanical I do find fascinating. Visiting this place brought me straight back to the USofA. You know those Americana type places… that sell antiques in the front yard. That is what this place reminded me of. I also discovered that Germany had Hillbilly’s too! These two guys were a little, well… shall I say a little strange to “visitors”. But they had a TON of motorcycles and old stuff. I found it also interesting to look around and snap as many pics as I could.

I am sorry for some of the poor quality photos I took there. It was kind of dark and the guy wasn’t happy I was taking so many pictures. lol These guys lived, ate and slept motorcycles. My apologies Herr Bruenner & son! And YES, he really looks like one of the ZZ-Top guys! Lol I knew I might be in trouble when the paved road ENDED at his haus!

I won’t post all my pics. But here is the link to them, if you want to see them all.

Ok, onto my pics…

Enjoy!

Model Train Museum

Dedication to model trains…

Pre-WWII it was called the Reichs Bahn and now it’s the Deustche Bahn. DB.

They also sold some cool car models too. BUB

And now the Motorrad Museum…

We all know the BMW blue and white logo… but how many of you know about EMW?
Eisenach Motor Werk… in the former East Germany (aka DDR motorcycle production)
EMW was forced to change the logo to red and white – so too not be confused with BMW logo!

All the bikes on display there were made in Germany. many infact were made in this region of Germany. Zunndap, Triumph, Sachs, Adler, Miele, ect…

They had lots of cool old signs on display…

They had a ton of VDO parking meters there too. Now they are obsolete.

Yes… those are REAL cob-webs. lol

I never knew Miele made bikes! I thought only vacuum cleaners and wash machines!

Nice carb…

Single cylinder BMW bike…

Another EMW…

And another EMW…

Tire’d ?

Spare motors…

Some clean running bikes…

Wankel twin rotor power for a BIKE!

SACHS motor…

Wankel power’d bike...

STOP and yell… sign…

Fire dept water pump engine…

BMW & MB wheels…

A nice guide book on this area…

And here is a video I found on YouTube that shows how nice this area is to drive. Its filmed from a motorcycle and shows how curvy the roads are. It also shows some of the castles and rivers and mountain rocks along the way.

End.

I'm not a huge train fan, but I LOVE places like that! That landscaping and diorama construction is fantastic. There's a great museum like that in Hamburg as well, although I can't remember the name of it right now. Looks like they had a lot of great car models as well. Hope you bought some good stuff!

Thanks for posting David!

Hey Ian,

Did you mean this place?

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...ght=wunderland

Wunderland in Hamburg. They had a TON of train, plane, cars, landscapes. They had it ALL in HO scale trains. I think they are in the Guinness World Record Book for largest train set under one roof.

Yes, I like these off beat places too.

Wunderland was a cool place to see. I had seen it on German TV many times and have always wanted to go see it in person. IF anyone goes there it is best to go there early in the morning or late at night... bc the crowds are UNBELIEVABLE!!!

I was there - when I went to that Prototyp Museum also in Hamburg.

You will LOVE the Fränkische Schweiz area! This is the area where I broke my (new)car in on these lovely curvy roads. Such a nice area to visit!

I would highly recommend:

Fränkische Schweiz (little Swiss - as the Americans call it!)

Burg Rabenstein

& Burg Rabeneck (you can tour this small castle on most days for a few euros)

Schloss Greifenstein

And... since you will be in this area... everyone should go to this beer garten while in the little Swiss area: Kathi Brau in Aufseß (or Aufsess). Every weekend you will see hundreds of bikers at this very cool beer garten and restaurant.

Kathi-Bräu
Heckenhof 1

PS: If you go to Google.de (Germany) and do a search for: Fränkische Schweiz Schloss

Fränkische Schweiz = the name of this area of Germany
Schloss = Castle

You will find a TON of castles in this area.
