strange writing on my differential

When I had some exhaust work done on my car yesterday, I noticed that something was written on my diff saying "71k". Anybody have any idea what this could mean. Any techs on here maybe know why someone would write this? strange.

Thanks

Maybe the rear axle was replaced? Junk yards are known to write the mileage the differential came out of a wrecked car.

I was actually wondering that. Just curious, what would cause the rear axle to need replacement?

^ What he said. Check that history. Could correspond to the next scheduled service on it as it may have been done 36k and needs it again at 71k based on 35-36k service requirements?

^ But why would they write the mileage on the diff? They have the computer to log data like that.

Because bmw does not change dif oil. He probably did it himself and noted next due miles.

Had this done many times on my previous cars....

I have the same markings on the transmission and differential on my truck. Somewhere along the way a technician made the marks. I wouldn't be too concerned.

I bought it private party in San Diego. Car had 60k thus a terminated warranty when I bought it, which is mainly why the guy said he was selling it. He had all service records from the dealer and a clean carfax. He didn't mention anything about the diff.

If you still have his number, just call him up and ask about it.

Then I would assume that the markings are from dealership/ maintenance visit. Could be a marking from factory as many times parts are marked with all sorts of markings.
