Just saw this article on BimmerFile
Makes sense, to cut price of car. http://www.bimmerfile.com/2010/09/02...-carbon-fiber/

They own a freaking carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Washington state. The material may cost more, but I highly doubt the labor and time are higher than that of a complex glass and steel motorized roof.

So basically the car will probably have the same if not close to the weight of the current 135......i really dont care about all that carbon fiber, the hood and trunk i can get myself. On the flip side i hope the power is at least 370 hp and 390-400 ft lbs of torque. If the power is close to those numbers i'll be upgrading from my current 1. We'll see

If you guys have read one of scott's post closely it seems, at least to me, this 1M was an after thought. He mentioned the next gen 1M will not be an after thought, which depends on how you read it, can imply this is.
I hope it has at least 350+ hp otherwise it will make a great 1er for those don't already have one. For those who do, I recommend waiting for the 2013 1M. |

Without carbon roof it will really suck. As the M1 won't have a special M-enigine and most of the parts will be transplanted from the M3, if they are going to save up even from some carbon fiber, i don't know what will be actually so pure about M1. But, that's are certainly speculations and i believe more the Scott's words. So far i am happy with what I am seeing and i will try to ignore such speculations for the future, because most of them tend to be negative and are just pissing-off my happy mood about 1M.

Wow. This is getting pretty sad. Each day we learn of yet another feature being nixed due to cost constraints.
The bimmerfile article is full of contradictions. They start off by saying how M engineers are trying to emulate the feel of the e30 M3, and how the feel of the e30 was due to light weight. In the next paragraph they go on to say that reduced weight of 1M depended on use of CF, but that is not feasible due to costs. This is looking more and more like a cynical marketing ploy and not a genuine attempt to capture the feel of previous M cars. Sad. |

This COULD have been the dog danglies.......but, it seems BMW sat on the fence for too long before giving the go-ahead and that's shafted the development programme, so now the whole spec gets watered down to get it out.... but it'll not be the car that everyone was clammering for that persauded them to make it in the first place..... I'm sure it will still sell.......... but, I've now decided to get something else and hope for something decent, spec wise, in the next gen 1M in 2014. |

The carbon fiber roof would have helped the 1M tremendously in handling, I think. A 1M weighting 80kg less than the 135i would really be something. But I don't think it will happen...
Why don't they just call it 135is ?

Turning me off now.. I was seriously considering a jump from the 125/128, rolling my lease early.
If it's heavier than the 135i and performance figures not much better, it'll be a 335i for me quite soon. |

Scott said only 3 days ago (30th) when responding to Alpines render that he needed to ADD the CF roof.
I somehow doubt BMW have redesigned the car in that time. And they have been filming the car. Are they going to have reshoot? Last edited by as7920; 09-02-2010 at 03:55 AM.. |

Yeah, but recent information has shown Scott to be a little less informed than previously thought.

I'm actually becoming more and more intereted in this car. It sounds like they're serious about keeping costs down.
The problem is, everyone basically wants all of the features of an M3 in a smaller, less expensive package, and it's simply not gonna happen. This is an entry-level ///M, and CF is still quite an exotic building material. Makes perfect sense to leave it off, IMO. Incidentally, there are cheaper methods of weight-reduction that could have been employed that we don't know about yet (aluminum?). Trouble is, most people want CF more for the bling factor than for weight reduction.

I'm gutted. I really love the ascetics on the cf roof. I've no doubt that the car will be great without one, but I really wanted an exotic looking machine on my next purchase.
Can't say I'm hyped about the car now. Just went from 1000 to 0. Maybe it's time be realistic and consider the Cayman S again and pick up a small runner with rear seats for the gf to use instead. Maybe get a second hand M3.. but it's really larger than what I wanted. My heart isn't in it. Goddamn shame. This must be how it feels for the DCT crowd when they were told they wouldn't get what they wanted!

So, on that point in time, it is going to have a CF roof. What we will end up having could be another story. . I think Scott is very reliable. However, whatever he states is only correct at that point in time. As we are talking about product in development, things could change because of one reason or another. I think there is still hope. As long as it doesn't give me an IS engine.

Indeed Scott does reliably inform us of the facts at the time and of course they are subject to change and sometimes do however considering where they are now with the design and marketing etc I believe anything Scott says about the appearance of the car is likely to be final.
A little while back he said the design had been signed off (hopefully this was with the approval of engineering he mentioned) They have also filmed the car for which Scott was present so I really do trust what he says regarding appearance. I put my deposit down yesterday so I hope things don't change too much. |

I'm going to leave ultimate judgement till the facts have been published. But until then.... I think I will be ignoring everything and believing BMW is all marketing and talk.

The more I read the less I want. It always seems that the news for the 1M is always on the negative side. I'm hoping for the best, but if it's not what I want I'm moving on to something else.
