Jump start a 6mt?
Has anyone jump started their car by pushing it and then popping the clutch (6mt obviously)? I have done this on my previous cars, but none of them had the push button start. Just curious if it is possible with these cars...

I remember reading it somewhere in the manual that this was possible. Only for 6MT of course.

"Tow Starting: Avoid tow-starting when possible. instead jump start the engine, refer to 155. vehicles with catalytic converter should only be tow started then the engine is cold. vehicles with automatic transmission should not be tow started at all. 1. Switch on hazard warning flashers, comply with local regulations 2. switch on the ignition. refer to page 47 3. Shift into 3rd gear 4. Have the vehicle started with the clutch depressed and slowly release the clutch. After the engine starts, immediately depress the clutch again. 5. Stop at a suitable location, remove the tow bar or rope and switch off the hazard warning flashers. 6. have the vehicle checked. (with xDrvie, do not activate HDC when the vehicle is being towed.

Interesting.... I distinctly remember this failing to work on my fathers M coupe. Guess I'll have to go out and try for fun.

Doing so may cause a voltage spike and damage the sensitive electronics on these newer BMWs and should ONLY BE DONE AS A LAST RESOURCE.

One time a guy was trying to sell me a porsche 944 (for resto) for $1200. It wouldn't start. He goes "fine.. give me $600". I said OK, and then my buddy pushed me up to 5mph and I popped the clutch. Vrooom to life, and off we drove lol.

BMW voids the warranty for so many different reasons such as transporting a two-legged pet during leap year without proper harnesses, can't imagine what they'd say when the DME records that the vehicle went 35 mph on the drive wheels without any fuel system in operation.
Use common sense, the BMW ain't running for a reason. Push starting isn't gonna correct the root cause and result in a vehicle that works properly. |

I had this same question a while back: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72105
As stated above, yes you can and I in fact tested it. Well, kind of. I tried it with a fully charged battery in my car and it worked no problem. In these cars I think you have to at least have a battery installed and the slightest bit of charge, otherwise the electronic push button won't be able to put the car into 'ignition on' mode (catch 22). I rocked my old civic for a week once w/absolutely no battery in the car. Fortunately I both lived and worked on a hill so it was just a matter of getting the right parking spot and not stalling it in between.

944? Isn't that one of those cars in the movie that our grandparents used to watch, like Pretty in Pink or something?

You're thinking of Sixteen Candles. The 944 is what got me into wrenching and euro cars, and I will always have a soft spot for them.
