Issues with e92 roundels...

Hey guys, posting this as an FYI. I'll just go in bullet format, it's easier.

- Normally full replacement roundels are > overlays, not in this case.

Why?

- The rear e92 roundel is contoured to the body line, so the side is not flat like every replacement I've seen, meaning the replacement will not fit right. Unless you get a special e92 only contoured one, it's going to look funny.

- The rear roundel is very difficult to get off in my experience. It is very hard to get a fulcrum and flat head under it - I thought maybe it was adhesive'd on, so I tried heating and flossing, no luck - floss broke every time. I don't know how it's on but it's a pain.

- The replacement grommets you get with more replacement roundels won't work in the front; you need the originals or ones like them (black with a beveled top), not the yellow ones that come with like all the Ebay ones.

NOW, on to overlays.

- The Bimmian ones at least *WILL NOT* fit the rear roundel. I don't know why but the little pie shaped wedges on the rear roundel are a weird size, and even though the diameter of the front and rear roundel is the same, the wedges are a different size. They almost fit, but are a little too big. You need to trim them by like 2mm.

So, overlays are a bummer, but unless someone else can figure out a) how to get the rear off and b) how to make a non-contoured roundel fit, that's what we're stuck with.

The joy of trying mods on cars before there are DIY's man... I spent 4 hours on that rear roundel, what a pisser. Now I have one black roundel up front and one blue in the back; time for overlays.

roundels indeed are a pain to replace

maybe you can try to get them out by drilling from the center of the roundel and using the hole you made as leverage to rip the thing out.

just make sure you don't drill too far in

Ya, I thought about that - the problem is I don't know how the rear one is even on. It doesn't want to budge *at all*, the other issue, of course, if that since it is contoured to the body line even once I got it off I'd be stuck without a replacement that fit! Gonna have to wait till someone makes one specifically for the rear of the e92, until then vinyls it is.

don't you have a replacement? look at how it attaches on that or maybe ask the parts department.

If you have not gotten the rear roundel off yet how do you know the vinyl will not fit? I have some overlays coming and would like to hear your updates as you progress.

I think you're misunderstanding. The "replacement" has the two pins, like the front ones; but it's not a proper replacement, I don't think there is one (aside from a straight up OEM one), because the e92 rear badge, unlike others, is contoured to the body line of the car, which makes it a rather unique shape. I could check my local dealership to see if they have any laying around, but somehow I doubt it. Here is an example:

You know how on the e90 the rear roundel is depressed into a small divot? It's a perfectly flat roundel on the sides. The e92 is not depressed, it sits on the regular contour of the car, so the rear is actually contoured and is not straight, meaning a straight replacement (which all the ones on ebay and online stores currently are) will not fit correctly.

I have the bimmian vinyl stickers for the e92; it comes as a sheet of stickers in different sizes for wheels, steering wheel, rear and front roundel, etc. The "large" size, which fits the front roundel fine, does not quite fit the rear roundel. It needs to be trimmed; it's not a huge issue. Vinyls are definitely the way to go until someone starts making cf/black/etc custom replacements for the rear e92 roundel. I will see if I can find a pic to more adequately describe what I am saying.

OK this will explain it I think

Normal rear badge on an e90:

My really poorly drawn side profile of said badge:

So the sides/rear are flat, like a little pizza. Every replacement I have ever seen looks like this.

Now, the e92:

See how the rear isn't depressed, but conforms to the body line? That means it isn't flat.

My poorly drawn side profile:

Stupidly exaggerated, but you get the idea. Trying to put a flat one on would either not fit at all or leave a big gap in between the car and badge.

So vinyls are the only way to go unless you can find an exact duplicate of the rear e92 roundel in the color you want.

My roundels were a cinch to replace. It took absolutely minimal effort. Sucks about the e92 roundel dilemma

Ya, I've replaced roundels on e90s, e46's, new 5 series's etc for clients no prob. This is the first one I've ever had an issue with.

the rear kind of has a rubber goo around it so it's somewhat stuck on, but wasnt much of an issue to get off tbh. The standard Roundel, as you pointed out, doesnt sit 100% flush, but unless someone is inspecting your car with a magnifying glass, they wont notice. I've replaced mine, since once I got it off I had not choice since the rubbery part was all worked... I'll post some pics when I get home (and i dont forget :P)

Good to know - are there also pins around it or is it just double sided tape?

Here are a couple pics of the carbon fiber roundel overlays that I got from Bimmian. They seem to fit pretty well.

I had a few extra overlays from my E46, so I stuck them onto the E92. It's A LITTLE off, but nothing that anyone would notice at all! I'll take some pics now.

It's cool guys, as I mentioned it's off by 2mm, so not a big deal. Just wanted folks to know they were off a bit.

Thanks for the offer Long!

Oh, also, cantc0pe messaged me and mentioned that the 72mm roundel might fit in the rear even though it's a bit to small. I will try that tomorrow and let you guys know.
