1M or M3

Forgot about the Boss 302, the real competition is between 1M vs the M3.

On one hand I want a lighter more toss-able car, and the other I want the last M3 NA V-8.

This is going to be a tough choice, but luckily my time line is perfect.

N/A all the way. you will be disappointed by BMW's tuned 1M coupe with hefty price tag

Same here. My lease is up in Oct 2011. I really love my 1 series, but my car was in the shop for 6 days because I needed another control module and the DME software update wasn't taking. I've had 2 HPFP replaced and it doesn't seem like BMW has found a fix yet. I love the V8 in the M3 and have always been partial to NA engines.

But, the 1M is going to be a blast if it is a true M car which I believe it will be. Can't wait til next year!

At least I'm not the only one. Whatever the decision, I'm in for next Aug/Sept ED. I really hope the 1M is something out of this world.But the last V8 would be sweet.Time will tell.....

I would choose the M3 for a (fast) track or other high-speed exercises ...

and the 1M for fun on curvy (mountain) roads

i would love to have the engine of the m3 in the size of the m1. the m3 is just to big and heavy nowadays

I'm in the same boat. Due to replace in June 11.

Always wanted M3 but now too big and 1M fits the bill.

My biggest concern is that its come too late in the current 1ers lifecycle and even with the heavy mods it will look dated as soon as the new 1er comes out.

I will also be owning it for 3+ years.

There's also a lot of new models coming out next year making the choice even harder.

what will be interesting next summer is the price difference between the two. Ive been hearing on this board and others the competitive pricing now on the M3. If the 1M is 'hot' and pushing MSRP, how much diff in pricing between MSRP 1M and near invoice M3?

Can somebody break it down? If there is only $5-7K between them, I think the decision is easy - M3. Although I want to get my hands on the 1M!

Just feels that BMW is trying to extend the E82 platform for a little too longer. Otherwise I will be very interested in a 1M. If the price difference is within 10k, M3 gives you a better value for the money.

I made the choice already. It's tough when the 1M specs aren't even released, never mind the ability to test drive, but I decided I'd rather have one of the last high revving N/A (V8 at that) M cars before they are gone. And the size of the M3 is deceiving. It feels light and nimble behind the wheel. If you get a chance to drive one and run it past 8k rpms, you'll have a hard time walking away from it.

I'll be so upset if M stops making high reving engines.

Ferrari did it with a twin turbo V8, why can't BMW do it with a twin turbo v6?

1M, I think these will the be the equivalent of the Caymen to the 911. BMW is going to have a difficult time keeping the 1M from out performing the M3 because of the weight difference. 36XX pounds? No thanks.

Different flavors IMO. FI vs NA. Its all about what strikes your fancy more. Running a car up to 8400rpms is freaking exciting. Turbos can be exciting as well.

Yup. Definitely a personal preference thing. I love high revving cars like the S2000. My dad hates them. He prefers a more accessible power band for every day driving.

V8 M3 is gonna be replaced soon anyway, makes these M3's a lot more rare now. I say pick one up, not many cars sound nicer with exhaust.

The M3 is the size of the 3 coupe, which handles BETTER than our 1 even though our car is smaller and lighter.
So the M starts with a more solid platform for better handling, and moves that up a few notches.

As the man said, the size becomes a non issue when you actually get in an drive one, and M3 that is.

I don't have and don't want to spend M3 money.
And if the 1M isn't truly special, then I'll wait and see what BMW does with the new 1. Hopefully they will fix their suspension error and greatly improve the handling.
That's all I really need. My 135i is just fine, it just needs a better suspension, and a cosmetic upgrade in and out.
The power is just fine with me, it's plenty good.
If BMW does that they'll have me back in 2 years.
