My hpfp went today

Funny thing is I was not even upset because I have been reading about this on the forum.

Driving to work this morning before one of the most important presentations I have to give and the check engine light came on with the car shaking violently. Pulled over, shut her down, and when I restarted she was fine. Drove the 2 more miles to work and had it towed to BMW of Sudbury. They called me to tell me it was the hpfp and injectors.

No surprise there.

Funny. Same damn thing happened to me today. Get in car and it's shaking more than normal and BAM engine malfunction warning. It's at the dealer now and I'm in a Camry for the duration .

29,600 of completely flawless operation and 1 day since my LSD install. Irony is a b*tch.

EDIT: I have never had a long crank. Just a really rough idle in the last few days. Planned on changing spark plugs this weekend to remedy it.

It happened to my car at about 30,200 miles. I looked at the other service records for the car to see what had been done before I bought it and noticed that at about 1800 miles and 6000 miles, it has the high pressure oil filter repaired as well. Both $1800 jobs.

They put me into a 2009 328i with no sport package. Confirms that I made the correct decision with the 6 spd 335. World of difference.

I just got a call from the dealer. They want to keep my car until Monday.

I guess I was incorrect and they did not end up changing the hpfp. They told me that the engine misfired so they ended up switching the ignition coils and spark plugs from cylinder 1 to 3 and vise versa.

Hopefully this will be a sufficient fix. I just want to make sure that I won't end up at the dealer 5 more times for the same issue.

I live 5 minutes from there but bought my car in Sudbury so I had it towed there. Feel foolish about it but I will definitely bring it to Norwood if it needs anything else (fingers crossed that it won't)

I bought my car at herb chambers in boston and I've never went there for service. Always went to Norwood. I live about 15 from there in Stoughton. My SA is Kim Lexner and she has been spectacular so far.

Update on my situation: They have to keep the car over the weekend and haven't a clue what's wrong. I'm pretty sure they haven't even looked at it but at least I get to swap the camry for a real car tomorrow morning . I wanted to rip into my new Dinan LSD too .

Welcome to the club. My guess is that your HPFP is probably going and the dealer is trying a "quick fix" first. My second HPFP was just replaced on Monday (9 Aug 10). The first one failed at 15,553 miles and the latest one failed at 34,822 miles, so the pumps seem to be lasting 15k to 20k miles between failures. They tried a "software update" a few weeks ago that didn't solve the problem for very long. I'm really surprised (disappointed) that BMW hasn't been able to solve this ongoing HPFP reliability issue during 4 years of N54 production.

I hate to hear that because now I am just going to be wondering when my hpfp goes...I have no idea what SWITCHING the coils from one cylinder to another will do. Just prolong the problem perhaps? So frustrating

This is interesting, it sounds similar my recent experience. My car started shaking violently under throttle and at idle, and threw the Service Engine Soon light but nothing else. No long cranks.

Herb Chambers kept the car for few days, opened a PUMA case, insisted that it wasn't the HPFP, said there were misfire codes but nothing related to HPFP, "swapped" the injectors and updated the software. They never gave me a straight answer on what happened (ie don't know or wont tell me). I wonder whether they just put a bandaid on and this thing is going to crump out on me again. I'm travelling all over New England for work over the next few weeks, I have my fingers crossed. It really sucks being nervous you're going to end up on the back of flatbed everytime you drive your car.

This is very concerning.

I spoke with my Service Advisor who seems great. She told me that BMW created a new software that the hpfp were not able to fix (the new ones). I have no clue whether or not that is true.

My SA (although very nice) wouldn't know a HPFP from a tie rod. I mostly just nod with whatever they tell me. I don't expect them to be up on the latest N54 technologies and software. I think either stuff gets lost i translation or they just need to say something instead of "We don't know" .

So I called this morning and they told me that after all of the work that they will in fact be replacing my hpfp. They have had the car since Thursday and I have been driving around in a 2009 328 x drive. The thing does not even compare to my 335. Man I want it back.

Hey at least you are getting yours changed. Mine apparently had a misfire on cylinders 1 and 3. So instead of doing something smart like swapping spark plugs or coils....they have just updated my software.

Now I'll normally agree with whatever bullcrap they send my way mainly because there isn't really much to complain about...BUT...I fail to see how software will fix a misfire. I'll go with the "experts"......for now. On top of that they need to keep my car yet again overnight to run another cold start test. They have had the car sitting there since Thursday.

I'm willing to wager that I just need to change my spark plugs and all issues will vanish.
