HU and dash illumination question

This may be a dumb question, but I rarely drive at night and haven't for the several past months and so I can't remember.

Are the function buttons on the HU, the steering wheel and the arm rests supposed to illuminate when the head lights are on?

My Speedometer and Tach dash gauges, overhead buttons and my HVAC buttons all illuminate, but the others don't. My LCD on the HU works fine. I've checked all fuses and all are good. I wonder if I have a short somewhere and they're all on the same circuit, or they just not supposed to light up.

mine light up. I thought there was a setting in the iDrive menus that let you adjust how bright you wanted it? I forget where it is tho.
