What is a vanos??

Afternoon!!

Can anyone tell me what the vanos does on a 335i? How can you tell if your vanos is faulty? Will it always throw a code if its kaput??

I'm confused, I thought the vanos was a sensor or solanoid?? So the vanos is a mechanincal part of the engine??

Not what I thought it was, if it's faulty would it through a code??

My car (335i) went into limp mode.

Put it into dealers and they changed a VANOS solenoid.

From what I can understand, it's the BMW name for 'Variable Valve Timing' first found in Hondas. Basically, when the engine hits about 4000 RPM the 'Vanos' alters the timing to optomize the power. On our 130i you can actually feel it kick in as the revs pass 4000.

Its similar in principle to the rather more basic VTEC that Honda still employ.
In the Honda, an oil operated valve shunts locks the valve train onto a high lift camshaft lobe - this third (high cam) lobe is not used below 5.5k rpm, the 'tappets' are running on the smaller cam lobes.
Its easier if you look at at than to try and describe it!

But basically it allows the equivalent of a high lift/long duration camshaft at high RPM (more performance) combined with smooth running and efficient idle at low rpm all in one package.

Anyone whos driven a race engine with high lift/long duration fixed timing cams will remember how lumpy and rough they are below say 3k rpm.

BT Cable will show these codes..

2A80 Inlet-Vanos variable cam control test, input signal
2A85 Outlet-VANOS variable cam control test

Both require dealer visits

I've just had both replaced... £350 including labour and had my oil changed.
I was quoted £1600... as previous mechanic put it as timing chain issue.
I had 6 error codes from oil pressure, vanos, cam chain, timing, crankshaft etc.
My car kept going into Limp Mode, and sounded like a 20 year old diesel transit van (aka a bag of spanners).
