I love the extra 50hp & 75ft-lbs!

Yesterday afternoon, Shiv installed the Xede and dyno'd my car. Here are some pictures, thanks again Shiv! The car runs great and exceeded my expectations although I should try to avoid ever hearing the exhaust on your car again, it sounds spectacular.

Here is another thread showing the installation, pretty much the same process I witnessed
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40385

Top Secret Stuff happening back there

Shiv sets up his laptop so he can upload the 91 octane map into the Xede

On the rollers she goes and gets the A/F meter set up

Fans are set up, imagine if those things were turbos going into a car

Alright, now the real fun begins! :rocks:

Car is strapped in with the harnesses and ready to go!

Testing begins!!! This is my first time ever witnessing a live dyno session, and I can only imagine how loud it gets with cars running exhausts or straight pipes

Wheels spinning with engine speed near 7000 rpms

And finally the results

BASELINE RUN 271HP and 282ft-lbs

WITH XEDE
324HP and 358ft-lbs!

Congrats, man! It will only get better over the next 2 weeks...you're gonna love it!!!!

btw - I know you were an active participant in my 1/4 mi. G-Tech thread, so please if you get a chance, get your Xede-equipped 335i timed for 0-60mph and 1/4 mi.; if not on the track, at least with another G-Tech timer...just to compare notes, of course. Thanks.

car would overheat eventually without them there probably, plus it helps colder air go into the engine and get exploded

is that much sporadicness normal? going up down up down? or is that just because of the dyno?

Interesting. So they're basically forcing more air into the car. I wonder if the dyno would show the same result without the fans there.

"forcing" idk about that, kinda recreates road conditions right? intercoolers not going to do much if no air is passing over it, and for N/A cars the air intake would end up sucking in tons of hot air w/o them

least i think thats what they are for

yea well you werent far off though, theres some videos on youtube of guys taking leaf blowers taping them to their CAI's and dynoing their cars, then they were even so bold as to spray nitrous into the leaf blowers intake

50 hp and 75 tq are really good numbers for 91 octane right?

xede is getting more and more tantalizing as things progress

was this the selenoidless version?

Thanks guys, as expected the dyno results are consistent with all the others on 91 octane and even Shiv was pleased at how each car is basically the same.

sflgator, I won't be able to hit up my local drag strip until March and I don't think any of my friends have a G-Tech on hand. If I get access to one, I'll give it a shot.

tekno, the kit I have is the solenoid-less version. With all the plastic covering in place, it looks stock

Once you take it off, it still looks stock except that the Xede is tucked away in a seperate compartment with some wires coming out... nothing messing looking at all. I believe my gains are typical for 91 octane (I use Chevron). Comparing my numbers with sflgator's, he produces something around 20 more ft-lbs of torque but his HP was close to mine. Maybe octane has a greater effect on torque than hp???

yea i think effeciency drops exponentially so it makes sense for the hp to be closer

93 vs 91 wouldnt produce more exaust volume right?

I'm not 100% certain, but assuming higher octane fuel mass is slightly greater than lower octane, exhaust volume should also increase slightly.

actually id like to know what shiv thinks, since in comparison his 93 otane put out more torque that meens somethings probably going on @ the higher rpms w/ the 93 octane

2007/335i/coupe-- Glad you like it. It was a pleasure meeting you

As for the fans, they are there to provide cooling to the intercooler and radiator. It's a lot less air than what the car would see on the road but it does serve the purpose as long as you allow for adequate cooldown times between runs. It is not to "force feed" the intake or turbos

Sflgator's dyno gains aren't directly comparable the car here because it was tested on a Mustang load bearing dyno, not an intertial style Dynojet. This is a much bigger factor than the difference in octane as each dyno uses a different methodology to measure torque/horsepower. This is why it is only valid to compare dyno results taken from the same dyno. All in all, I suspect sflgator's car to put down 5-10 more whp and 10-15lbft of torque more due to the higher octane fuel (93 vs. 91). Just a guess though...

Cheers,
shiv

PS. The wavey lines in the tuned run was caused by the car oscillating back and forth quickly during the dyno pull. That has more to do with how tightly and straigh the car was strapped down than anything else. This oscillation does not exist on the road whatsoever

Glad to see the chevron 91 is working well also..
do u have any plans of mixing a higher octane fuel at any point?

i know the peak numbers are not comparable whatsoever, but arent the gains comparable? even with diffrent corrections and dynos the gains should remain constant i thought? although i guess the extra torque could have nothing to do with the 93 just the tune

The best you can do when comparing the results from two different kinds of dyno is to compare individual % gains over stock (not absolute hp/torque numbers). But even then, you're comparative data is getting tainted with different testing and engine loading conditions. Good enough to get an idea but really a bad idea when splitting hairs. IIRC, stock cars tested on the Mustang dyno in Florida were seeing close to 290-300lbft of torque. I'd attribute that to a characterstic of the dyno more than all the Florida cars putting down 20-30lbft more than all the other cars i've dyno everywhere else in the US

cheers,
shiv

Hey Shiv, hope you'll be able to take a little time off and enjoy the New Year instead of constantly dealing with people like myself who want more power lol

I couldn't resist and had to take the car into mountain twisties for a quick run just now and my lord, I have to once again learn to control the throttle again. I turned off the DTC and DSC and this thing spins its wheels so easily through the corners. The car starts to oversteer really quickly so I had to turn on the DTC just to be safe since it's dark now and the road is cold. Boost comes on strong and unlike the stock 335 which at times you forget its turbocharged, now you never forget it has two snails in it.

Initially I was hoping that Shiv would tune my car with a second fuel map using 100 octane since I only live 10 minutes away from a station that serves it from the pump. But a few days before my appointment, he said he prefers not to do it now... and while I was talking to him yesterday, I caught him slipping saying he didn't want another 335i more powerful than his Just kidding, for now he doesn't want to introduce too many variables into the beta testing. After a couple months, he may release higher octane fuel maps.

Yep, Peter Pan BMW in San Mateo, California. Hey, even Peter Pan grows up and no longer can fly, so what's the next best thing? Open a BMW dealership and get his own personal BMWs at cost!
