Pipercross Airfilters

Dont bother....I bought one of these a few weeks ago (163 engine, long cone type filter). Today being the first day I have had free I decided I would fit it, stripped the car and inserted the filter, air box wont close, so take the filter out, defo the right way round and defo in right regarding the lug and all checking fine, the box still doesnt close. Tries the old filter, box closes within seconds with no probs. Refitted the pipercross and the air box assembly still wont close tried to force it a bit to see if I could compress it slightly (end was catching) so I could get a tight fit and then rip...the end came right out the filter. £50 wasted.

I have been dealing with cars since I was 13 so fitting a filter is not rocket science and not new to me, compared to some of the other things I used to get up to, changing engines, gearboxes, heads etc etc, this should have been straight forward but no!
On closer inspection, it would appear the filter is a diferent size, slightly taller so the end was always going to be under compression, so even if it did fit in it would have failed at some point.

Will call them tomorrow see what they say, dont hold out much hope to be honest.

Pipercross have sent me the wrong size filter in the past - if the live chat function is still on their website, it's worth asking before you do anything.

Have used pipercross airfilters on previous cars in the past without any fitting problems.

Best talk to them and make sure you have the correct part.

Cheers for the advice guys, yeah I called them about 4pm tonight, explained to the chap what had happened and he requested I sent some pics, so I sent him one with a spirit level on top to show the height difference from the OEM one. I have had to go and buy a new OEM one today to allow me to drive the car as the old one is filthy and clogged. So I hope to hear from them tomorrow and see what they say. Will keep you posted.

In past K&N have been nothing but trouble on cars with MAFs, I had loads of MAF issues with Focus and A3 due to too much oil on the K&N. Difference is K&N oil or use to oil both sides thus contamination of MAF with oil. Pipercross keep their filters very dry in comparison to avoid this.

Not much, A couple of bhp on a car producing 180bhp+ is not going to be that noticeable.

The main difference lies in that they still flow a similar volume of air after many thousand miles whereas the stock item is restricting air flow and causing a loss of power.

Plus they can be cleaned so you will never have to replace the air filter again.

Funny that

K&N guarantee that in the event of MAF failure due to oil contamination as a result of a properly oiled and installed filter, they will warranty all remedial work.

So far, they've never had a substantiated claim, which to me suggests that anyone who actually has had MAF problems has probably over-oiled their filter.

Maybe something to consider?

wow thats new never heard of this - could be they changed something, I had issues with MAF from a new K&N already oiled from factory. After two mafs on an A3 I went to cotton green as could not get a pipercross quickly and had no problems after that,

Browsing A3 and seat leon forums came across a lot of people with similar issues, could be K&N changed design hence now offer the deal

sorry but they are not maxpower filters. Fact is they should not be looked as power increase items but but what they do is work at far better rate once you done 5k , 10k in them where a paper one drops off quite quickly as milage increases. Considering BMW now dont change the filters for something like 30k its crazy to keep paper one.

Yes you could change a paper one more reguallry but one bother works out cheaper just to clean a panel filter every 10k

And its not marginal as it seems having number of times had to put back a paper one (spare old one in garage) while cleaning mine the difference was obvious.

For example in my 150Bhp E46 320D it was case of huge clouds of black some under hard acceleartion or none when with pipercross. Both filters roughly having done 10k.

So kind a does help

And given the scale of the job, changing an air filter in a 330d (someone's post recently) I can see a few 330d owners doing this too.

Yeah, the air flow rate after 10k or so is much better with these types of filters, this wis why I wanted to use one, also this is why police spec vehicles use Pipercross filters.

Also, Ihave spoken with pipercross and expressed my concerns, they have told me to return the filter to where I bought it from for an exchange, so I do so and let you know what happens.
