Need a Brake Pad Suggestion - Hawk HPS or Akebono Euro
i think my front pads are on their way out. visually, it doesn't look like there's much pad life left, and there has been an odd squeak coming from the front brakes. however, the light has not come on yet. (i would use copper grease to lube the new brake pads before installing them to prevent any squeaking, right?)
i want to prepare and purchase a front brake pad set along with a new sensor wire so i'm ready when the light comes on. currently, i'm not sure whether to go with the hawk hps street pads or the akebono euro ceramic pads. i know the akebono pads are a bit cheaper, but the price difference isn't really that big of a deal. i don't track this car at all, and enjoy the spirited drive now and then. any past experiences? what pad would you recommend? if other, please specify! thanks |

For your needs, I highly recommend the Axxis Ultimate's. They're not a "low dust" pad but they do dust significantly less than the factory pads. They have better initial bite than the factory pads, so it's an upgrade. Dave Zeckhausen, the brake guru to whom I always listen, also recommends them highly. You can get 'em from him, too.

There's no contest here... Cool Carbon pads win this battle. We're currently doing a July Special for Cool Carbon, and then we're also doing a free shipping deal. Guaranteed the best pricing for these pads, which easily beat the others in contention.

hm, in looking between the hawk, cool carbon, and axxis ultimates, i think i'm gonna rule cool carbon out. it seems the pricier of the 3, the car's only a 2.5i. how much does the cool carbons usually go for per axle?
it's down between the hawks and the axxis... tough choice here! either way, they're likely better than the jurid OEM equipment. also, should i change out the rotors as well? almost through my second set of front OEM pads and the rotors are original. car has 53k miles and i don't believe the rotors are warped thanks for all your replies Last edited by mike87; 07-21-2010 at 07:32 AM.. |

You can get a stoptech package from injectedperformance.com for roughly $555ish which is all 4 ss lines, rotors, & pads.
If you are just going for pads, Ive had ultimates on my other cars and they are great for spirited drives and autoxs. |

I have experience with the Ultimates on my 330Ci both on the street and on track. For street driving, they're solid pads. They have a bit more initial bite than stock and don't dust as much. For street applications, you'll really never get close to having pads fade away on you regardless of what you choose. That said, on the track, the Ultimates do offer better pad fade resistance than stock but not much. This is pretty much the case with all street performance pads. If you want to settle pad fade issues on track, a track pad is the only way to go....

The CC were a huge improvement. They have great bite and fade was a non-issue.

Re: the cool carbons, how are they noise- and dust-wise compared to stock?
I'm looking to buy a second set of pads soon to have a backup for track days, but I don't want to get a dedicated set of *track* pads. I'd like ones that are still livable in day to day driving, but are at least as good in terms of braking ability and no noise, with preferably lower dust compared to stock. |

What's a "decent" price for pads? What do the OE pads cost, for comparison?
Is it important to use the same pads all around, or can I leave the OEM ones on the back? |
