Question Front Bumper License Plate

Hello Everyone!

I am new to these forums, because I now have questions that I need to ask in regards to cars, rules & regulations and BMWs in general, but I am not new to the BMW family at all. I have been driving the 745i model 03 for about 2 years and I just bought the new 335i Sedan, so there goes my history of dealing with BMWs.

Ok now before I get to my question I would like to apologize if I am re-asking an already answered question. I did as many searches as I could but I couldn't find the answers that I needed, so here is my very first question:

Are front bumper license plates mandatory by law in the province of Ontario? I live in North York, Toronto, and I absolutely HATE by all means the look of a front bumper license plate. Please let me know if it is mandatory or I can be happy that I can remove it!

Thank you all in advance,

OK, more info. Yes, it is required by law and and is punishable by a $110 ticket (if I am not mistaken). Some cops will give you a fix it ticket, which gives you a few days to put the plate on, show up and get the ticket voided. Most just give you a $110 ticket and send you on your way.

Thanks a lot Kevin... if im not mistaking...! I hope im not! That is such a shame! we get to drive such awesome cars here and lately we have even been getting cars before other countries, and we have to bare with the stupidity of a few officials. Who needs front bumper license plates anyways? But again thank you all for the help!

Sure. For what it's worth I did not put a plate on my e92, and will see how long I can go without a ticket.

I live in BC, which is also illegal to not have front plate, but the excuse i usually use is that I tell them the car used to be registered in Alberta, where front license plate is not required by law, I got this information before from someone, and I've gotten away with just a verbal warning everytime by the cops here....maybe you can try this, at your own risk of course...

Yup, standard fare $110 ticket here, 90 + the 20 victim surcharge... Same type you get for dark tint, wrong lights, loud exhaust, too low suspension... you know...

I think Bimmian sells painted plate holders which might help, or you could get your existing black plastic one painted so it blends better. I'm not referring to a plate frame btw, I'm referring to the actual bracket that mounts onto the bumper which the plate itself then attaches to.

Yes they do - and as far as I can tell they do a nice job matching the color too. Hopefully I won't ever have to use mine.

The ironic thing is there's all these beat shtboxes driving around with broken lights, missing plates etc., and I can guarantee you the nicer cars like ours gets pulled over more often than not for being deplated.

Kitchener not so bad...
Toronto? especially Peel and York... have fun.

i'll go deplated once I get my front bumper repainted and bra'd this spring.

Funny you mention that, I was at Kipling and the Queensway yesterday, you guys know that corner. I shit you not, 4 cars in a row, all old beaters, drive by me with no front plate. I never notice that crap but 4 in a row. I bet I get pulled over twice before they get it once.

Off-topic, but I was around Yonge & Steeles last night, this old Cadillac infront of me with 5 people inside hit the brakes to stop for the red...and instead of coming to a complete stop, it was like the car just couldn't do it, so halfway into the intersection still TRYING to come to a stop the driver lets off the brakes and just goes ahead (mind you this is at maybe 20-30km/h, when he started braking it was maybe 50km/h). There was a cruiser to the right at the very front of the line and he didn't do squat! I saw the officer look though...why...WHY?!?

Ohh yea.. I have had my share of that damn bad luck too! I am telling you... the doctrine that the Police here follow is based on nothing but communism. Almost none of them can see someone with a nice car and not feel all authoritative and bitchy and start giving trouble. I don't understand why the judicial system of this country has been designed with such a cheap mentality!

I was stopped In my previous car by a cop for having the front plates not too visible (oh ya, I was speeding too )

This is how I attached my front plates now. I asked the dealer not to drill through the bumper.

I used padding on the back side of the plate to avoid noise and scratching the bumper lip (not shown in pictures)

If you don't want to drill holes through the front of the bumper to mount it,
there's a much better way from Skene Design (www.skenedesign.com) which has brackets that mount from under the bumper.
