How to steer correctly?
Hi guys,
what is the best way to steer? I find myself shuffle steering 99% of the time, and I'm starting to feel guilty about doing it, because I was taught (at BMW Fahrer training) that you're supposed to do hand over hand... Should I relearn or is shuffle steering fine? TIA |

I'm unconvinced it matters that much. One of the best drivers I know has terrible hand position and habits he's unaware of.
show us your in-car video so we can poke fun? Personally, when I ride passenger, I threaten to hold hands with a dude if he continues to shuffle steer. I tell him "keep those hands at nine and three or its gonna get real gay up in here." Works every time. |

Like everyone here are saying, get your hands at 3 and 9 and don't sit so far back that you arms are straight. With some bend you should be able to get your 9 o'clock hand to 2 o'clock and your 3 o'clock hand to 10 o'clock. For tracking, that will handle most corners.
Gentle smooth inputs and you'll be golden. Get the position and hold. Then let the wheel open. It's amazing how much the car will position itself if you let it. |

I don't think shuffle steering is the worst thing in the world, it has it's place at the right time. When I think I am going to run out of room before crossing my arms, i'll shuffle enough to allow enough myself to hold a position.
However, it's not a substitute for smooth steering. I remember an autoxer was on the highway and we were going on a simple ramp. He shuffled the whole way when he could've just turned it. Literally the the wheel moved from 12:00 to 2:00.

Definitely hands at 9 and 3 is preferred.
However, I also recommend knowing how to shuffle steer for street cars and to use it appropriately. Most street cars, BMWs included, will not have direct enough steering to allow for you to make >90 degree corners and not cross over your arms. So you need to move your hands on the wheel and when that happens, shuffle steering works best. It also a valuable tool for street driving for the same reason. The problem with shuffle steering is when people use it on every corner. Skilled shuffle steering can be pretty smooth, but not as smooth as not removing/replacing your hands on the wheel. So when I instruct people there is usually only 1-2 corners per track that really require shuffle steering in a street car, so I focus them on 9-3 for all corners except those.
