F10 535i C&D Comparo- WTF?
I know this belongs in the 5 Series section, but I wanted to talk about it with all you guys in case you didn't know. In the recent Car and Driver comparo between the M37, F10 535i, and A6 3.0T, the results were the following:
1st- A6 2nd- M37 3rd- 535i We all know that is complete bullshit. This isnt me being a BMW fanboy, it's me pointing out that C&D has taken a lot of criticism for their BMW bias, and I think they are just trying to shake that criticism. We all know the 535 is the better car, the A6 has been around for 6 years already. And their initial review of the 535 was good. Am i the only one who is confused? PS: I would put up a link for the article but it's not online yet.

Didn't that happen with a C/D G37 vs. 335 comparo some time back? Wait, I think it was an overheating limp-mode for the 335 in that test.

Yeah I think that one was an overheat. I'm pretty sure there was one along the line that started behaving badly because of fuel delivery, but I might be mistaken.

I read the article and they were really disappointed with the new 5 Series steering. First time I ever saw C&D criticize a BMW's steering.
Seems C&D is turning more and more "Audi-ish". |

Wait, what? I just searched C&D--this was against a 2009 535. Is that an F10 platform 5er?

no, that comparo was last year, and there was a 535 6 speed in that one, and it came in second.

the front of the cover said "you are not going to believe this".
C&D gets a lot of criticism for their love of Bimmers and they are simply pointing out that a Bimmer doesn't always win ever comparison. |

It doesn't sound terribly wrong. If any of you have actually driven the 535i or 550i, you'd actually be disappointed in the steering feel. I had the chance to drive both cars during a BMW event and left extremely disappointed. There wasn't a significant change in steering feel alternating from comfort and sport mode. If I could compare the steering feel, I'd say its pretty darn close to your typical Mercedes; vague, somewhat light, with not much feedback. Don't get me wrong though, the car did handle very nicely for its size, but there is just something lacking in the steering.
I haven't read the C&D article mentioned, what I said is strictly based on my personal experience driving both cars in a closed course. |

I think what we are seeing with the F10 is BMW not caring about the customer base it has built, they are trying to branch out and get new customers that dont necessarily care about the way their steering feels, which is extremely dissapointing. Yeah, sure, it might sell more cars, but the enthusiasts like myself will suffer in the process. If the F30 turns out being a smaller 5 just the way the 5 is a smaller 7, I'm keeping my E92 Coupe forever. Screw the F__ body styles

As far as I know the new steering is electrical (as oposed to electro-hydraulical) steering, in order to increase efficiency. Too bad...

The car magazine review is like "witch hunt" once they say something it'll be quoted all over and people accept it as the "truth", sad.
Remember i-Drive when it came out the first time? Who complains about it now. Also, remind me also about 7-series Bangle butt, Benz S-class, Lexus LS460 now has a form of it and Chris Bangle retired already. I haven't test driven the F10 but my 2008 535i w/ sport (ARS, anti roll stability hydraulic system in the rear) feel planted around the corner even with DSC off. Alot of driving feel in tight corner and high speed can be caused by tires, the good thing for E60 they have spare so bye-bye RFT once I need new set. |

C&D has always been ecstatic on BMW steering. This is the first time they put it down.
The 535i came in third in a 3 car comparo-they cited the new electric power assist as "uncommunicative". I would never get a 5 Series anyway-it's too big and heavy and expensive-but the C&D trend these days is to favor Audi in these comparos: First it was the S4 winning against the 335i (but it was close). Now its the Audi A6 beating out the 535i (not so close). Disappointing. |
