Receiving text messages on IDrive via IPhone

I have received my Bimmer F10 525d and im so happy

It has the Ambient light = Nice!!! Automatic Gearbox = Super nice!!! Xenon, heated steeringwheel, phone, automatic "long-light", 19" styling 331, Sophisto-Grey, M-suspension, HIFI pro logic 7, automatic "trunk-door". Navigation Pro is being installed at the dealer just now.

My phone is an Iphone 3G, and the software is Ios4 (just updated it). I do not have the snap-in adapter.

Now heres my problem: I can't get the text messages up on the IDrive screen?? My wifes old Sony Ericsson is working just fine and the text messages is displayed on the car screen.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Wiil it work with the snap-in adapter? Can i download a program that will fix the problem?

What about the new IPhone 4, will the problem be fixed there?

I believe it's the new operating system in your phone. Your f10 does not know how to fully communicate with your phone anymore. If you had kept the old OS, it would most likley work. You will probably have to wait for BMW to update your idrive.

SMS won't transfer with the iPhone. Check here:

Choose Germany or UK for the feature list. If you choose US you'll get redirected to the crappy US bluetooth site.

I just received my F10 2 weeks ago and the text and email feature does not work. After calling my dealer and ending up with BMW USA i got the answer. "The iPhone 4 is not compatible with all features" at least yet. BMW told me that as the iPhone software is upgraded that this feature might become available. I do not have the snap in tray as they have not reached the market yet. I don't believe that that will make any difference anyhow. Our hope is in Apple for this one!

Why would you say that?
The "My BMW Remote" app only works in iPhone, and there will be a new iPhone app "BMW Link" in March 2011. Don't forget the dedicated iPhone, iPad holders, and upcoming wifi hotspot. If anything, Apple is BMW's most supported platform other than RIM.

And to be fair, apple's support for bluetooth profiles is a bit restricted, though it is getting better.

You need to check it in life for different types of phones. My Nokia was listed as not supporting calendar, SMS or notes, and it does!!! Actually depending how you use this app you get different answers. If you put your VIN, you'll get different answers than if you just choose the type of the car. Initially my Nokia wouldn't show anything except contact lists, until I went to Office option in the menu, and checked the box for other features. Now it works nice!

Options menu or not my iPhone 4 does not show messages or calendar and I doubt the cradle will make any difference as connectivity will still be bluetooth

The way Blackberry works with iDrive (and Ford Sync) is the use of the new Bluetooth Message Access Profile (MAP); enabling access to emails and text messages. This is likely to be implemented by most smartphones in the future. Without it, it would be a more complicated workaround for each specific phones as to exactly which Bluetooth profiles they support (there are close to 30 different bluetooth profiles).

So if Apple goes with the standard and the trend and starts implementing MAP, iPhones would work with iDrive, Ford and many other devices right away. But you know Apple, they like implementing their own way and expect everyone else to cater to their decisions.

If you look into this, you will know that neither iPhone nor iPad supports the Message Access Profile (MAP).

The iPad also does not support Hands Free Profile or the Address Book Profile (as yet)!

Perhaps we will have better luck with iOS5?? Apple please make this happen

Blackberry (RIM) have gone a step ahead of Apple and they have the MAP in their phones. AFAIK, some Nokia and Sony phones do have this profile too!! I don't seem to be seeing it in the Windows 7 phones though
